The City of Sunnyvale is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Accounting Technician within the Finance Department. This position is situated in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.

The established eligibility list will be utilized for current and future vacancies in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.


Under the general supervision of a designated supervisor, the Accounting Technician provides essential technical accounting assistance in various areas such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, and revenue collections. Responsibilities include managing daily operations of the assigned area, which encompasses inputting and processing financial data, handling checks, addressing exceptions, and responding to inquiries.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Accounting Technician position represents a fully qualified journey-level classification within the Accounting Technician series, characterized by its emphasis on tasks requiring a solid understanding of fundamental accounting procedures and practices.

This role is differentiated from the Senior Accounting Technician classification, which involves more intricate accounting responsibilities.

Essential Job Functions

(May include, but are not limited to, the following):

1. Execute a variety of technical accounting tasks related to the preparation, maintenance, and processing of financial records and transactions.
2. Process, code, enter, and retrieve financial data utilizing computerized accounting systems.

3. Verify accounting entries and maintain reconciled financial records pertinent to assigned functions such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, and revenue collections.

4. Address inquiries from other departments and the public, investigate discrepancies, and follow up on outstanding issues.

5. Collaborate with staff to resolve disputes.

6. Interpret rules, regulations, policies, ordinances, and laws as they relate to assigned job functions.

7. Perform cashiering duties, including processing checks, balancing cash drawers, and verifying daily cash receipts.


WORKING CONDITIONS


This position necessitates prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping as part of daily activities. It also requires repetitive hand movements and fine motor skills for computer use. Additionally, near and far vision is essential for reading reports and documents, as well as using a computer. Acute hearing is necessary for providing effective customer service. The ability to lift, drag, and push files and documents weighing up to 10 pounds is also required. Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

Graduation from high school or equivalent AND


Two years of technical accounting support experience, with at least one year specific to one of the assigned functional areas, including automated financial systems.

Knowledge Of

1. Principles and practices of basic accounting and financial record keeping.
2. Functions of accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, cashiering, auditing, or revenue collections.
3. Basic understanding of contracts, regulations, and laws specific to job functions.
4. Office methods, procedures, software, and equipment.
5. Principles of customer service.

Ability To

1. Establish and maintain accurate records and files.
2. Understand and apply laws and procedures.
3. Utilize a computerized accounting system for data input, inquiry, and report generation.
4. Perform mathematical calculations using a calculator and operate a 10-Key pad by touch.
5. Operate a computer using word processing and business software, along with other office equipment.
6. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
7. Foster positive and effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, public officials, and the public.
8. Demonstrate initiative and exercise sound judgment in performing duties.
9. Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team; prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
10. Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.

Licenses/Certificates


Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license or the ability to provide alternative transportation as approved by the appointing authority and a safe driving record.

Desirable Qualifications

College coursework in finance, accounting, or a related field.

EXAM PROCESS
Applications will be screened competitively based on the minimum qualifications for this position.

SELECTION PROCESS


Candidates who achieve a passing score on the examination will be placed on an eligibility list for up to one year, in accordance with the City's Civil Service Rules and Administrative Policies.

Top candidates on the eligibility list will be invited to participate in a selection interview with the department at a later date.


Selected candidates will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment process, which may include a background check and medical examinations conducted by a City-selected physician before hire.

Prior to starting work, all newly hired employees will undergo fingerprinting to check conviction history. A conviction history will not necessarily disqualify an applicant from appointment; however, failure to disclose conviction history may result in refusal of employment or termination.

Positions covered by the Department of Transportation regulations will require submission to a pre-employment drug test and random drug and alcohol testing.
