The NYC Bar Association is dedicated to enhancing global justice by mobilizing legal professionals across borders to bolster civil society and promote an ethically engaged legal community. This organization represents a collaborative effort among international attorneys to drive public interest innovation. As a non-profit initiative, we unite prominent law firms and partners globally to spearhead international justice projects and offer pro bono legal assistance to social justice organizations.

Program Overview
The Journalistic Support Program was initiated to provide pro bono legal aid to emerging local journalism and reporting entities within the United States. Since its inception, the program has successfully assisted numerous clients across various states.

Clients of the Journalistic Support Program encompass creators and distributors of local and public interest journalism across diverse media formats, including investigative and advocacy publishers. The program offers a comprehensive array of legal advice and representation essential for the establishment and operation of reporting entities. Services include corporate, transactional, employment, and tax-related guidance, along with assistance in obtaining tax-exempt nonprofit status and managing subscriber/membership initiatives.

In collaboration with numerous law firms nationwide, the Journalistic Support Program engages volunteer attorneys with expertise in various legal domains. To date, a significant number of legal professionals have partnered with the program to serve clients effectively.

Additionally, the program acts as the US/Canada coordinator for an international initiative aimed at safeguarding investigative reporting organizations from legal threats. This role involves close collaboration with program staff to oversee the engagement and compensation of legal counsel representing members against libel and related claims.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate communication with prospective clients and assist in client intake processes;
  • Coordinate scheduling of meetings, prepare agendas, and distribute relevant materials;
  • Organize and maintain electronic client files, compiling data on program activities;
  • Draft and send engagement letters and project descriptions to clients and co-counsel;
  • Support the planning and execution of programs and events;
  • Assist in updating website content and other communications;
  • Perform general administrative tasks as needed;
  • Manage additional responsibilities and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience;
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a professional office environment;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team;
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with keen attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, maintaining professionalism with diverse stakeholders;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and website management tools;
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with journalism and nonprofit/public interest legal work;
  • Understanding of the U.S. legal landscape, particularly pro bono services;
  • Experience collaborating with legal professionals.

Candidates must be available for in-person work on a hybrid schedule, typically requiring a few days in the office each week, with the remainder being remote work. This schedule may be adjusted based on departmental needs.

Compensation: The starting salary ranges from $55,000 to $60,000, depending on experience, for a 35-hour workweek.
