Compensation Range

$129,030 - $160,188 Annually

Position Summary

We are seeking a Graphic Designer to support the Z Program's Science & Technology Assessments and Counterproliferation Analysis & Planning System. In this role, you will contribute to and oversee design strategies, manage design projects, and implement cutting-edge design techniques and tools. You will coordinate with other designers and collaborate with senior management, clients, and interdisciplinary teams to define objectives and strategies, ensuring the delivery of high-quality designs, visual aids, environmental signage, and displays. This position is situated within the Technical Information Department and will be associated with the Z Program in the Global Security Directorate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop intricate designs, multimedia, and digital communication initiatives. Collaborate with senior leaders to set standards for complex projects and work with contributors across the program and external partnerships.
  • Provide estimates for time and budget, coordinating the efforts of others to meet client expectations, financial constraints, and deadlines.
  • Engage with clients to define and establish objectives that meet design specifications for various projects.
  • Oversee design concepts, graphics, multimedia, and content strategies that effectively represent the scientific and technological aspects of the program, analyzing the successful completion of these products based on quality, timelines, and budgets.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure consistent high-quality designs, applying innovative and creative approaches that fulfill client and audience needs. Act as a subject matter expert in your area and share your expertise across similar disciplines within the laboratory.
  • Utilize specialized knowledge in web interface design, HTML coding, and technical illustration to execute advanced technical designs, conduct beta testing for web applications, and implement design requirements with minimal oversight.
  • Provide comprehensive consultation and feedback on the development of sensitive and complex projects that include visual components.
  • Establish quality standards for work and offer creative guidance on techniques, processes, and cost-effective alternatives for producing a variety of products. Serve as the final quality assurance for the most intricate, technical, and highly visible design and digital communication products.
  • Offer specialized support for computer applications, including database management, electronic information capture/content management, operational standards, procedures, and web design.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance from another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience in graphics or web design, technical illustration, or multimedia design.
  • Extensive knowledge in graphics and/or web production or multimedia design, particularly in large-scale communications.
  • Comprehensive understanding of graphic design principles and methods, along with a deep knowledge of emerging design techniques, technologies, and tools.
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Cloud (specifically InDesign, XD, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat), content management systems such as Django, PostgreSQL, WordPress, Drupal, and Liferay; as well as the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).
  • Experience in leading and managing multidisciplinary projects and teams, establishing commitments regarding scope, schedule, and cost, while setting expectations and quality standards.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within diverse teams that include other creative professionals, such as photographers, illustrators, editors/writers, web developers, and 3D modelers or animators.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capability to lead the conceptualization of effective high-quality design projects, including planning, direction, and coordination of tasks to achieve objectives. Experience in maintaining design integrity across all media, publications, and campaigns.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in photography and/or video editing.
  • Familiarity with pre-press and publication processes.
  • Experience with the Intelligence Community, with knowledge of analytic tradecraft processes and best practices.
  • Knowledge of the Atlassian Suite, particularly Drupal, or similar tools; visualization tools such as Sketchup, Visio, and Affinity; and database tools like Django and PostgreSQL.

Security Clearance

This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance from another U.S. government agency at the time of hire. Additionally, you must be able to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access. Please note that having an active Q or Top Secret clearance does not guarantee DOE SCI access approval; if denied, you may be subject to reinvestigation of your existing clearance.
