Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the role of Assistant or Associate Director of Financial Aid at the University of Virginia School of Law. This position will be responsible for providing exceptional financial aid services to students, ensuring compliance with federal and University regulations, and contributing to the development of financial aid policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Counseling and Advising: Provide expert guidance and support to law students on all aspects of financial aid, from pre-law strategic planning to post-graduation financial advising.
  • Eligibility Determination: Determine student eligibility for financial assistance and award the appropriate type and amount of aid in accordance with established federal and University standards and guidelines.
  • Loan Counseling: Conduct student loan entrance and exit counseling during individual appointments and in large group presentations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay up-to-date on financial aid regulations, policies, procedures, and financial counseling through self-directed professional reading, participation in professional development courses, and networking with professional contacts in the financial aid and student finance arena.
Additional Responsibilities for Associate Director
  • Compliance and Operations: Ensure compliance in the packaging and timely disbursement of funds, including processing financial aid appeals, monitoring SAP, and completing R2T4 calculations, FAFSA verifications, and C-code resolutions.
  • Loan Program Management: Manage aspects of the federal Direct Loan Program, including loan awarding, processing, return of funds, and reconciliation.
  • Financial Counseling: Provide individual counseling to students on financial issues such as debt management, loan repayment, financial literacy, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Program Management: Assist the Director in running UVA's Virginia Loan Forgiveness Program.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and at least two years of financial aid experience required for Assistant Director; Bachelor's degree and at least four years of progressively responsible financial aid experience required for Associate Director.
  • Skills and Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of federal Title IV financial aid programs, awarding eligibility requirements, and supporting regulations; committed to providing quality assistance to a socio-economically diverse student population; demonstrated ability to provide innovative responsiveness to problem-solving within a team environment; process-oriented and able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment; excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong technical skills with Microsoft Office suite; experience with PeopleSoft, ImageNow, and Department of Education web applications strongly preferred.
