Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the role of Director, Summer and Special Academic Programs. The Director will be responsible for the comprehensive planning, organization, and execution of the University's domestic undergraduate Summer Session and January Term programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Development and Implementation: Develop and implement academic programs that align with University and school-level academic goals, in collaboration with schools and departments.
  • Collaboration and Partnership: Collaborate with department chairs, summer chairs, associate deans, and faculty in designing engaging and academically rigorous courses.
  • Special Programs Management: Assist with the development, and manage the delivery, of Special Programs in Summer Session such as the Summer Language Institute and UVA Advance.
  • Faculty and Staff Management: Support department chairs, summer chairs, and associate deans in recruiting, hiring, and training faculty and graduate student instructors.
  • Compliance and Risk Management: Partner with UVA HR and the Office of the EVPP to ensure SSAP faculty and student teaching assignments comply with university policies.
  • Financial Management: Management of the budget for SSAP operations, including revenue projections, expenditure tracking, and financial reporting.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with university policies, regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Policy Development: Development and implementation of policies and procedures to promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
  • Student Recruitment: Coordination of student recruitment efforts, including marketing initiatives and admissions processes for visiting students.
  • Program Evaluation: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of SSAP programs, soliciting feedback from students, faculty, and other stakeholders for continuous improvement.
  • Support Services Coordination: Collaborate with university business units to coordinate support services such as housing, dining, transportation, student health, and recreational activities, for Summer Session and J-term participants.
  • Communication and Representation: Serve as the primary point of contact for inquiries and concerns related to the university's Summer Session and J-term programs.
  • Professional Development: Engage in professional development opportunities to stay current on trends and best practices in administration of special terms and higher education generally.
  • Supervision: Directly supervise 3.5 staff FTEs.
Qualifications
  • Education: Master's degree.
  • Experience: Minimum of seven years of experience in academic program administration, preferably in a university setting.
  • Leadership and Management: Demonstrated leadership abilities, with experience managing teams and projects effectively.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Financial Management: Understanding of budgeting and financial management principles.
  • Student Recruitment: Familiarity with student recruitment strategies.
  • Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Commitment to providing equitable and inclusive educational experience in alignment with the University's commitment to Inclusive Excellence.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications and experience using enterprise database systems such as Salesforce and Workday.
  • Flexibility and Availability: Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed during peak periods of activity.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching courses at the college level; Knowledge of curriculum development, instructional design, and assessment practices.
