Basic Purpose

This role involves planning, organizing, directing, and executing therapy programs aimed at enhancing clients' well-being through recreational activities as part of a therapeutic psychiatric or medical treatment initiative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designs and executes therapeutic recreational activities tailored for a designated group of clients.
  • Conducts assessments, interviews, and evaluations to determine clients' needs, preferences, and capabilities.
  • Creates individualized therapeutic intervention plans based on assessments and monitors clients' engagement and progress towards set objectives.
  • Collaborates with a multidisciplinary treatment team to formulate comprehensive treatment strategies and suggests modifications based on ongoing evaluations.
  • Contributes to the development of treatment protocols, educational resources, and specialized programs for clients.
  • Acts as a community resource on recreational therapy and related health topics.
  • Facilitates various therapeutic recreation initiatives for clients' families and groups, including outdoor adventure programs, physical activities, creative arts, and special events.
  • Engages with clients in active sports and recreational activities, providing coaching and supervision to encourage participation.

Level Descriptor

This position represents a career level where individuals are responsible for executing professional-level work. Employees at this level will manage and implement a recreational therapy program of limited scope and size, without direct supervisory duties, although they may provide guidance to less experienced staff.

Education and Experience

X36A

Education and Experience requirements include a bachelor's degree in recreational therapy, outdoor recreation, physical education, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

X36B

Education and Experience requirements include a master's degree in recreational therapy, outdoor recreation, or physical education; or a bachelor's degree in recreational therapy, outdoor recreation, or physical education with one year of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

X36A

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include an understanding of the principles and techniques of recreational therapy, outdoor adventure activities, and behavior modification methods. The ability to plan and supervise recreational activities, establish effective working relationships, communicate clearly, and work with clients facing mental or physical challenges is essential.

X36B

In addition to the above, this level requires the ability to motivate volunteers and support staff in delivering recreational therapy services.

Special Requirements

Applicants must be prepared to undertake job-related travel, possess a valid driver's license, and be available for on-call duties as required. The Office of Juvenile Affairs has designated certain positions in this job family as safety-sensitive.

Successful candidates must pass a background check and drug screening.

A trial period of 12 months will be required.
