The Vice President of Public Affairs and Media Relations is tasked with the formulation and implementation of communication strategies, media outreach, and relationship management. This role includes organizing press events, managing crisis communications, and producing internal documentation related to various projects and initiatives. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, the VP collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, a variety of stakeholders, and city agencies to develop impactful messaging and storytelling, as well as executing events as necessary.

In this capacity, the VP will also contribute significantly to the strategic planning and execution of communications, particularly in relation to the President's Office, including the President & CEO. This encompasses serving as the primary speechwriter for the President & CEO and other senior officials, while also working closely with the SVP to create a cohesive long-term narrative for the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the SVP to devise and execute an executive communication strategy for senior leadership, encompassing speeches, conference appearances, and opinion pieces.
  • Act as the Chief Speechwriter for senior executives.
  • Work in partnership with the SVP and senior External Affairs leadership to build a long-term narrative around significant projects and priorities.
  • Draft press releases, including select quotes, remarks from principals, summaries, and other necessary materials.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive press strategy for assigned initiatives.
  • Coordinate with City Hall communications staff and other city agencies.
  • Contribute to the enhancement and protection of the NYCEDC brand reputation.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key media personnel through various platforms.
  • Proactively organize media interviews and speaking engagements to convey essential messages to target audiences.
  • Utilize social media and measurement tools to bolster communication efforts.
  • Oversee 1-2 direct reports within the team.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in economic development, government, or political science preferred.
  • 7-10 years of professional experience in communications, with a focus on media relations, political campaigns, economic development, journalism, public relations, or government agency work.
  • A strong interest in public service, economic development, innovation sectors, urban planning, and the various facets of New York City.
  • Exceptional writing and public speaking capabilities; familiarity with economic development is advantageous.
  • Proven ability to engage with and coordinate consistent messaging across diverse internal departments and external partners.
  • Demonstrated success in leading proactive media initiatives.
  • Experience in speechwriting is essential.
  • Strong media relations skills, with the ability to foster relationships with journalists.
  • Creative and independent thinker, possessing strong research and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in digital multimedia tools (e.g., PowerPoint, social media metrics, video production, Canva).
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish (written and spoken) is a plus.
  • New York City residency is required within a specified timeframe after hiring.
