Position Summary: The Vice President of Public Affairs and Media Relations plays a pivotal role within the Public Affairs Department. This executive is tasked with the creation and implementation of press materials, proactive media engagement, relationship cultivation, press events, crisis communication strategies, and the development of internal documentation related to NYCEDC initiatives. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, this role requires collaboration with interdisciplinary project teams, a broad spectrum of stakeholders, other city departments, and City Hall to shape messaging and storytelling, as well as to execute events as necessary. Furthermore, the VP is integral to the strategic planning, ideation, and execution of communications specifically tailored for members of the President's Office, including the President & CEO. This includes acting as the Chief Speechwriter for the President & CEO and other key officials, while also partnering with the SVP to construct long-term narrative strategies for the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the SVP to devise and execute an executive communications strategy that encompasses speeches, conference appearances, and opinion pieces.
  • Serve as the Chief Speechwriter for senior leadership.
  • Work closely with the SVP and senior External Affairs leadership to develop long-term narrative strategies surrounding key NYCEDC projects and priorities.
  • Draft press releases, including select quotes, remarks from principals, summaries, and other necessary materials.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive press strategy for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate with City Hall communications staff and other city agencies.
  • Contribute to building and safeguarding the NYCEDC brand reputation.
  • Establish relationships with key media personnel using various platforms and tools.
  • Proactively arrange media interviews and speaking engagements to promote key messages to target audiences.
  • Utilize social media effectively, including measurement and listening tools, to enhance communication efforts.
  • Oversee 1-2 direct reports within the team.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in economic development, government, or politics is preferred.
  • 7-10 years of professional experience in communications, primarily in media relations, political campaigns, economic development, journalism, public relations, or government agency work.
  • A strong interest in public service, economics, innovation sectors, urban planning, and all facets of New York City.
  • Exceptional writing and public speaking abilities; familiarity with economic development is advantageous.
  • Proven capacity to engage with and coordinate consistent messaging across diverse internal departments, city agencies, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated success in leading proactive and innovative media initiatives.
  • Experience in speechwriting is essential.
  • Strong media relations capabilities, with the ability to foster relationships with journalists.
  • Creative and independent thinker, equipped with strong research and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in digital multimedia tools (PowerPoint, social metrics, video creation, Canva, etc.).
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish (written and spoken) is a plus.
  • Must be a resident of New York City within 180 days of hire.
