Position Overview

The Senior Vice President of Policy Development and Advocacy is a pivotal role within the Leadership Team at the Community Service Society of New York. This position will oversee a dedicated team of six to eight policy analysts committed to driving progressive reforms aimed at addressing economic, racial, and social disparities, thereby enhancing upward mobility for low-income residents of New York City.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the policy department, including budget management, staff recruitment, supervision, and performance evaluation, while establishing departmental objectives and tracking progress.
  • Lead significant research initiatives within the policy department, including the annual Unheard Third survey, while independently conducting research and mentoring departmental staff.
  • Collaborate with the President and Executive Vice President, as well as departmental staff, to formulate and advance the policy agenda.
  • Provide updates to the Board of Trustees regarding the progress of essential policy initiatives.
  • Seek new funding opportunities and keep funders informed about ongoing projects in coordination with the Development Department.
  • In partnership with the Vice President of Governmental & Public Affairs, represent the organization in public forums with elected officials, advocate for policy positions, build coalitions with key stakeholders, respond to media inquiries, and develop cohesive media strategies.
  • Produce reports, policy briefs, opinion pieces, and review and edit similar documents created by staff. Collaborate with the Vice President of Communications and Marketing to ensure effective policy brief design and social media outreach.
  • Engage with various policy and advocacy partners and coalitions across all areas of the department's focus.

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or master's degree in public policy, urban planning, economics, or a related discipline, along with a minimum of five years of supervisory experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of a wide range of policy and community development issues affecting New York City and New York State, along with an understanding of related social policy challenges.
  • Extensive experience in research, demonstrating strong qualitative, quantitative, and methodological skills.
  • Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal communication abilities.
  • Strong judgment, attention to detail, and the capacity to provide constructive feedback to research personnel.
  • Innovative problem-solver with strategic thinking capabilities and a proactive approach.
  • Ability to effectively engage with the organization's constituents, policymakers, and advocacy groups.

Compensation and Benefits: The annual salary for this role ranges from $165,000 to $195,000. The Community Service Society offers a comprehensive benefits package, including performance-based bonuses, health, dental, and vision insurance, life and long-term disability coverage, a 403b retirement savings plan, flexible spending accounts, commuter benefits, an Employee Assistance Program, and generous paid time off.

Work Environment: The organization currently supports a hybrid work model, requiring onsite presence at least two days per week, with the flexibility of three days per week of remote work.
