Position Overview:

Applied Research Associates (ARA) is in search of a Senior Engineer specializing in unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) systems to enhance the US Navy's modeling, simulation, and testing initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of both remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles, along with expertise in machine learning and artificial intelligence, to aid a research team in addressing current UUV challenges and exploring innovative capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a dedicated team of researchers on UUV design, architecture, testing, and development.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering or a related discipline, accompanied by 2-4 years of experience in unmanned underwater vehicle systems.
  • U.S. Citizenship and eligibility to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • In-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical UUV operations, covering mechanical, electrical, hardware, software, sensors, and controls.
  • Experience in UUV design, modification, testing, data analysis, troubleshooting, and operational procedures.
  • Proficiency in underwater environment data collection utilizing custom or third-party sensor systems.
  • Experience in developing and executing UUV tests and evaluations aimed at creating models and simulations, as well as verifying and validating these models.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive research reports, technical proposals, and formal presentations, along with interpreting complex data.
  • Proficient in the MS Office Suite.
  • Capability to work independently or collaboratively within a diverse team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with U.S. Navy UUVs or similar systems.
  • Familiarity with the Naval Autonomy Test System (NATS), NATS Integrated Management System (NIMS), and/or Virtual Maritime Autonomy Test Environment (VMATE).
  • Experience in developing or utilizing Tactical Awareness Kit (TAK) applications.
  • Experience in developing and conducting tests for digital twin environments.
  • Experience in surveying underwater environments and collecting relevant data for testing purposes.
  • Possession of an active DoD Secret security clearance.
