Position Overview

This role is pivotal in guiding and empowering the IU Student Government, a vital student organization committed to advocating for the student community at Indiana University Bloomington.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a principal advisor within a collaborative advising team for the IU Student Government, ensuring effective support and guidance.
  • Foster and sustain robust relationships with student leaders and university colleagues, demonstrating exceptional conflict resolution abilities while providing consistent organizational assistance.
  • Deliver personalized advising and leadership development to the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the IU Student Government.
  • Engage actively by attending meetings, conducting one-on-one sessions with students, and participating in IUSG events and activities.
  • Design and execute training programs, team-building activities, and retreats in partnership with IUSG student leadership.
  • Support students in navigating crises and conflicts within the IUSG, while serving as a liaison between IUSG and university officials.
  • Assist the IU Student Government Treasurer in managing an organizational budget of $150,000, ensuring compliance with financial processes and university purchasing policies.
  • Guide the awarding of IU Foundation account-related funds and scholarships.
  • Provide insights on university policies and procedures, facilitating reunion planning and other initiatives.
  • Instruct the First Year Internship Program during the latter half of the fall semester to nurture the development of new IU Student Government members.
  • Support IU Student Government leaders in their participation in regional and national meetings, enhancing their leadership experience.
  • Collaborate with IU Student Government leaders and alumni to strengthen alumni engagement and donor cultivation efforts.
  • Attend and contribute to IU Student Government Congress and Executive Cabinet meetings.
  • Participate in campus-wide committees focused on student initiatives aligned with the Office of Student Life's priorities.
  • May serve on various campus committees to share best practices in student life.

General Duties

  • Develop and implement programs aimed at enhancing student engagement and involvement across campus.
  • Engage directly with students at life events, gathering feedback to inform future initiatives.
  • Collaborate with departmental staff and student organization leaders to achieve shared goals, often coordinating funding for initiatives.
  • Assess and report on the effectiveness of student life initiatives, presenting findings to stakeholders to secure future funding.
  • Guide student organizations on operations, budgeting, leadership, and compliance, promoting student development through advising.
  • Plan and coordinate outreach efforts to maximize student participation in initiatives.
  • May provide mentorship to other Student Life Specialists, recommending process improvements to enhance service delivery.

Qualifications

Combinations of relevant education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may substitute for work experience, and vice versa.

Education

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in public affairs, public health, counseling, social work, education, business, or a related field.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in higher education student affairs or a related field.

Work Experience

  • Required: 2 years in student services, higher education, or a related field.
  • Preferred: 2 years of experience advising student organizations and leaders.

  • Flexibility to thrive in a dynamic environment, thoroughness, and dependability.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and provide excellent customer service.
  • Commitment to diversity and ability to build partnerships with students and university departments.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of student affairs principles, current trends in student engagement, and proficiency in Microsoft 365 products.

Working Conditions

This role requires effective communication and the ability to operate standard office equipment. The position involves both sedentary work and movement around the office and campus. Essential functions can be performed with or without accommodation.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana. This is an in-person position.
