Position Summary
This is a term position not to exceed 13 months, with the possibility of extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Please note that this appointment will not grant permanent status within the Federal service.
Salary Range
Salary: $61,023 (Step 01) to $79,331 (Step 10).
Note: First-time hires to the Federal Government are typically appointed at Step 01.

Key Responsibilities
As a Physical Scientist within the Geology, Minerals, Energy, & Geophysics Science Center, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Conducting fundamental raster and vector analyses of spatial datasets by integrating information across various disciplines to support the creation of unique research outputs, including geological maps of diverse regions.
- Assisting in the compilation of physical science data for integration into GIS databases, utilizing source materials such as maps, photographs, data tables, and digital remote sensing imagery.
- Engaging in fieldwork to collect and describe soil, stream sediment, and rock samples for geological mapping, resource evaluation, and geochemical analysis, particularly in remote areas under challenging conditions.
- Assembling and analyzing absolute measurement data from contractors to ensure quality control of calibration data collections.
- Computing, analyzing, and interpreting records related to streamflow, water levels, and sediment quantities to assist in the scientific assessment of hydrological phenomena.
- Preparing laboratory reports that detail sample identification, methodologies, and results, while compiling and analyzing test data to evaluate process efficiency or diagnose equipment malfunctions.
Physical Requirements:
The role involves physical exertion and may require prolonged standing in laboratory settings. Field assignments necessitate outdoor work, which includes significant walking and climbing over rugged terrain. Physical demands may include lifting heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds and navigating restrictive spaces.
Work Environment:
Work is primarily conducted in field, laboratory, or office settings. Laboratory environments may involve exposure to dust, toxic chemicals, and mechanical hazards, necessitating the use of safety equipment such as laboratory coats, safety glasses, and gloves. Fieldwork entails exposure to extreme weather conditions and potential risks from wildlife.

- Must be suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
- Selected candidates may be subject to a one-year trial period.
- A valid state driver's license and a safe driving record are required.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination is mandatory.

Special Requirements for This Position:
- This vacancy is limited to the first 35 applications received and will close once this limit is reached.

Qualifications
Basic Education Requirement: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited institution leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics, including 24 semester hours in physical science or related fields.
OR
B. A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above, totaling 4 years, with at least 24 semester hours in physical science or related engineering science.
FOR GS-07: In addition to the basic education requirement, applicants must meet one of the following:
- One year of graduate-level education (18 semester hours) in physical science or a related field.
- Superior Academic Achievement based on undergraduate study.
- One year of relevant professional experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service.
- A combination of graduate education and professional experience as described above.
