The compensation for the selected candidate will be determined based on various factors, including departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated salary range reflects the University's good faith estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Columbia University Libraries is a renowned academic research institution, serving as a pivotal center for research and education. The Libraries curate, maintain, and enhance collections that transcend traditional formats and domains, adapting to a dynamic information landscape and creating unique opportunities for users to engage with global knowledge. As essential collaborators in the University's research and educational framework, the Libraries connect users with rich collections, foster impactful learning experiences, and provide innovative research support for a diverse user base.

Reporting to the Vice Provost and University Librarian, the Chief Human Resources Officer oversees the operations of the University Libraries' Human Resources Department and leads the development and management of a comprehensive human resources function across the Libraries. This role is pivotal in shaping HR strategies and initiatives related to recruitment, organizational change, diversity and inclusion, employee engagement, compensation, performance management, and adherence to HR policies and practices. The incumbent will be part of the Libraries' senior leadership team, collaborating with senior managers to implement HR strategic initiatives that ensure the organization is equipped with the necessary talent and skills to fulfill its mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a strategic leader and advocate for organizational development, promoting a program that embodies the organization's values and objectives. Collaborate with the leadership team to ensure effective communication and administration of HR programs and policies.
  • Design, implement, and manage a comprehensive onboarding program for new hires. Supervise recruitment and hiring processes for a diverse workforce across multiple libraries and campuses, ensuring diverse candidate pools for all positions.
  • Oversee departmental operations and mentor a team of HR professionals, ensuring compliance with University policies while enhancing recruitment, onboarding, and retention processes.
  • Manage performance evaluation and salary increase processes for non-union staff, advising managers on performance criteria and improvement plans.
  • Engage in University contract negotiations and serve as the primary contact for labor relations issues, managing disciplinary cases and grievances.
  • Administer the position classification process and ensure alignment with University policies.
  • Develop strategies to recognize staff achievements and enhance employee engagement through training and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines, managing HR records and responding to staff inquiries regarding policies and benefits.
  • Lead special projects that impact Library operations and oversee the collection and analysis of HR data.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7 years of progressive HR experience.
  • Proven ability to anticipate organizational needs and address them effectively.
  • Experience in data-driven decision-making.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development in human resources management.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in MS Office and Google Workspace.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education and supporting a unionized workforce.
  • SHRM/HRCI certification is desirable.
