Job Overview

This role will report to the Director of Legal Affairs at Global Refuge. The Immigration Legal Consultant will provide essential training and expert guidance on immigration legislation, policies, and practices to support our network and field offices. The primary responsibility of the Immigration Legal Consultant is to deliver client-focused, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive legal advice and representation on immigration-related issues.

This position offers remote work flexibility with occasional travel as necessary.

Global Refuge, previously known as Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), is a nonprofit organization committed to assisting newcomers in their pursuit of safety and the American dream. Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver training and technical assistance to local staff on various immigration matters, including documentation, asylum processes, family-based petitions, work authorization, and adjustment of status.
  • Conduct research and develop resource materials on immigration law, policy, and ethical legal practices for diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate with local partners to organize legal workshops that provide limited legal services for clients navigating immigration applications.
  • Train staff on delivering trauma-informed, client-centered legal screenings and representation before the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration Courts.
  • Prepare and facilitate outreach and educational programs on immigration law and legal service management.
  • Provide technical assistance on case escalation and liaison support, addressing potential processing issues.
  • Conduct training for the network on how to facilitate group information sessions regarding critical legal matters.
  • Engage in community outreach and education, delivering presentations and representing the organization at various functions.
  • Perform legal research on immigration law and maintain current knowledge of U.S. immigration policies and practices.
  • Ensure accurate data entry and record-keeping for grant-funded initiatives.
  • Represent Global Refuge in coalition meetings and build relationships with similar organizations.

Qualifications

  • Experience in providing training and technical support on immigration matters.
  • Strong research and writing skills in immigration law and policy.
  • Ability to organize and conduct legal workshops effectively.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally competent legal practices.
  • Experience in outreach and education programs related to immigration law.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and data for grant projects.
  • Ability to network and collaborate with various organizations.
