The Immigration Legal Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Immigration Legal Services program at Global Refuge, aiding diverse immigrant populations, including asylum seekers, refugees, and individuals seeking family reunification. This position involves collaborating closely with legal staff and interpreters to provide comprehensive, trauma-informed legal assistance to clients facing immigration challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist clients in understanding immigration benefits and gathering necessary documentation under attorney supervision.
  • Collaborate with interpreters to ensure effective communication and accurate documentation.
  • Support attorneys in drafting applications and following up with federal agencies regarding case statuses.
  • Manage correspondence from immigration authorities, updating case management systems, and assisting clients in responding to requests for additional information.
  • Provide timely updates to clients on the status of their cases.
  • Facilitate case escalation to appropriate authorities when necessary.
  • Maintain detailed and organized case files, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Engage with clients and community partners through outreach and support for legal service events.
  • Work towards obtaining Department of Justice accreditation through required training.
  • Stay informed about relevant immigration laws and trends affecting clients.
  • Uphold client confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards as outlined in organizational policies.
  • Assist in mentoring interns and volunteers as needed.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • Preferred two years of experience in a legal or related environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Pashto, or Dari is highly desirable.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and interpersonal skills in diverse settings.
  • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace.
  • Familiarity with legal practices and pro bono work is advantageous.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Adaptability to changing program needs and client requirements.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
