The Immigration Legal Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting the Immigration Legal Services team at Global Refuge, a nonprofit organization committed to serving diverse immigrant communities. This position involves working with clients such as asylum seekers, refugees, and others seeking humanitarian aid and family reunification.

In collaboration with Immigration Legal Services staff and interpreters, the Immigration Legal Support Specialist will provide high-quality, trauma-informed legal assistance to low-income individuals. Responsibilities include preparing applications and petitions for review by legal professionals. This is a full-time, hourly role under the supervision of the Director for Legal Affairs.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties Include:

  • Under attorney supervision, offer clients information regarding immigration benefits available through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), assist in gathering necessary documentation, and aid clients in completing applications.
  • Collaborate with interpreters and translation services to ensure effective communication with clients.
  • Support attorneys in client interactions, drafting applications for relief, and following up with federal agencies such as USCIS and the Department of State (DOS) regarding case updates.
  • Manage correspondence from USCIS and DOS, including maintaining the immigration case management system, notifying clients, and assisting them in preparing responses to requests for additional information.
  • Respond to client inquiries about the status of their cases pending with USCIS and DOS.
  • Work with attorneys and clients to escalate cases to the CIS Ombudsman or seek assistance from Congressional representatives when necessary.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other service providers and community partners.
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date client files and detailed case notes, ensuring timely data entry and compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Perform various administrative tasks, including data collection and reporting as assigned.
  • Represent Global Refuge in interactions with clients and community members, including scheduling appointments and supporting outreach efforts.
  • Pursue Department of Justice accreditation by completing required training and education.
  • Stay informed about relevant laws, policies, and trends affecting the immigrant population.
  • Uphold strict client confidentiality and adhere to ethical practices as outlined in Global Refuge's guidelines.
  • Assist in managing interns and volunteers as needed.
