Description

The available positions are part of the Special Design Program, and Paraeducators may be reassigned throughout the academic year based on student enrollment or other considerations:
  • DI - Collaborate with K-12 students with developmental disabilities and physical requirements in the Designed Instruction environment.
  • HOURS PER DAY: 7
  • SCHOOL YEAR POSITION (192 DAYS / 10 MONTHS)
  • ANTICIPATED START DATE: SCHOOL YEAR

  • SALARY: LEVEL 33 on the Paraeducator Salary Schedule. Experience increments are based on experience in similar permanent positions within public schools in Washington State or other states.
Responsibilities

  1. Deliver instruction in core academic subjects as designed by the teachers/specialists. Support the special education teacher/general education teacher in executing the student Individual Education Plan, including student accommodations and modifications. Aid the teacher in preparing materials and collecting and recording data.
  2. Engage as a collaborative team member. Assist the teacher in executing behavioral and social skills programs as designed and supervised by certified staff. Under the guidance of certified staff, implement district de-escalation and soft-restraint techniques as necessary.
  3. Support students with physical and mobility needs and personal care. Assist secondary students with pre-vocational and transition activities. Manage student equipment and assistive technology as required. Supervise and ensure the safety of students in various settings. Administer, monitor, and document medication following district policies/procedures and student health care plans, as necessary.
Qualifications
  1. Proven ability and aptitude to fulfill the responsibilities listed.
  2. Must provide a high school diploma (or equivalent) AND 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited college, an AA or BA degree, OR pass an academically rigorous assessment.
  3. Must complete Core Competencies within one year if hired into a Paraeducator role (refer to the ESS Collective Bargaining Agreement).
  4. Demonstrated interest in working with students with a wide range of disabilities.
  5. One year of successful work experience, training, or school district experience with students or adults with disabilities preferred.
  6. Ability to respond appropriately to aggressive and physical behaviors.
  7. Have successfully completed or be willing to complete the District de-escalation/soft restraint training. Must demonstrate initial competency level as measured by instructor observation.
  8. Willing and physically capable of kneeling, bending, and working or sitting on the floor with students; running after students, based on student needs.
  9. Provide personal care assistance to students including, but not limited to, feeding, tube feeding (with training), toileting, and diapering, based on student needs. Must pass the District strength and agility screening test, when necessary and based on student needs.
  10. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Heavier lifting will utilize a two-person lift or assistive devices.
  11. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a positive, professional, and confidential manner.
  12. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  13. Demonstrated ability to follow directions, carry out routines, and implement interventions as directed by certified staff or supervisors.
  14. Basic computer skills required.
  15. Proficiency in basic communication skills and ability to see, hear, and listen to the teacher and students throughout the classroom or school settings in order to supervise and maintain a safe environment for a diverse group of students.
  16. Must have access to reliable transportation.
Additional Information
  1. Work Schedule - Days and hours are subject to change depending on program and district needs.
  2. Stipends, Leave Accruals, and Holidays - Stipends, leaves, and paid holidays are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement as negotiated.
