Job Title: After-School Program Assistant

Position Overview

  • Work Schedule: 3 hours each day
  • Employment Type: Academic Year (193 days / 10 months)
  • Daily Working Hours: 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Compensation: Level 45 on the Spokane Public Schools Activity Leader Salary Schedule. Salary increments based on prior experience in a Washington Public School or licensed childcare facility in Washington State. Completion of STARS profile is mandatory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate a structured schedule of activities and events for school-age children before and after school.
  • Ensure the proper upkeep and management of facilities utilized in the program.
  • Oversee all children participating in the after-school program.
  • Assist the site director in planning and organizing program activities.
  • Maintain essential records and documentation.
  • Implement appropriate and constructive discipline as outlined by the program coordinator.
  • Perform additional assigned tasks as necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven ability to meet the outlined responsibilities.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience and skills in working with elementary-aged students.
  • Preferred background in a school environment or similar youth program.
  • Education in child development or a related discipline is advantageous.
  • Completion of 30 hours of Basic Training within 60 days of employment. An additional 10 hours of STARS training is required annually.
  • Must comply with MERIT requirements (Managed Education and Registry Information Tool).
  • Strong interpersonal and basic communication skills are essential.
  • CPR certification, first aid card, food handler's permit, and proof of MMR Immunization or certified exemption for medical/religious reasons are required upon hiring.
  • Ability to effectively engage with a diverse group of students, educators, parents, and administrators while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Positive interactions with youth and adults from various backgrounds are necessary.
  • Physical capability to accompany students on field trips, perform bending and stooping as needed, run after students, and lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Willingness to assist students with personal hygiene in emergency situations.
