Position Overview:
This role involves on-call work with training opportunities aimed at supporting the Nutrition Services program within Spokane Public Schools.

Under the supervision of the cafeteria manager or designated personnel, the employee will aid in the preparation and serving of nutritious meals, ensuring cleanliness within the allotted time. This position is crucial for maintaining a self-sustaining program that aligns with budgetary goals and promotes the nutritional health of students as part of their educational experience.

Responsibilities include interacting positively with kitchen staff, school personnel, students, and the community in a professional manner. This role offers a chance to gain valuable experience in school kitchen operations.

  • On-call position with variable hours based on site needs.

No guaranteed hours or benefits are provided.


Key Responsibilities:
- Learn and adhere to the policies and procedures of the Nutrition Services program and Spokane Public Schools.
- Perform routine food preparation, meal service, and sanitation tasks under the guidance of the manager or designated staff, following established food safety protocols.
- Clean dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment, including operating dishwashing machinery according to set standards.
- Collaborate with colleagues in food preparation and cleaning tasks, demonstrating a positive and cooperative attitude.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and a willingness to learn and adapt to various responsibilities within the kitchen environment.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
- Ability to perform the listed responsibilities effectively.
- Availability to work at any school location on an on-call basis, Monday through Friday.
- Capability to follow directions and apply meal preparation fundamentals in accordance with safety and sanitation standards.
- Willingness to learn about the Nutrition Services program, including knowledge of kitchen tools, safety regulations, and portion control methods.

Requirements:
- Obtain a food handler's permit within 14 days of hire.
- Provide proof of Hepatitis A vaccination or a waiver within 14 days of hire.
- Pass a physical exam to lift 30 pounds.

Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development through workshops and training.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
- Basic mathematical skills and familiarity with measuring tools are necessary.
- Previous experience in food service is beneficial but not mandatory.
- General computer skills are preferred.

Physical Demands:
- Must possess the physical capability to attend work regularly and fulfill essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to lift 30 pounds independently, bend, reach overhead, and stand for extended periods is required.

Work Environment:
- The position is situated in a kitchen/cafeteria setting during early morning to early afternoon hours, with exposure to common kitchen hazards such as hot surfaces and sharp utensils. Frequent lifting and movement are integral to the role.
