Job Summary

The Detention Officer I performs specialized law enforcement work in the care and security of inmates to ensure their constitutional rights and welfare are safeguarded in the County Jail.

Key Responsibilities
  • Admit and book inmates, ensuring proper processing and security measures are in place.
  • Supervise inmate trustees, overseeing various duties such as serving meals, cleaning cells, and performing laundry detail.
  • Patrol the jail area to prevent escapes and maintain order, monitoring cameras and emergency systems.
  • Inspect the cleaning of jail facilities to meet state and local requirements.
  • Prepare and transport inmates to and from court, visitations, or medical appointments.
  • Perform life safety functions, including CPR and fire safety and suppression.
  • Answer telephone calls and assist the public with questions concerning inmate status.
  • Assist visitors, inspect items brought to the jail for inmates, and receive, secure, log, and receipt inmates' property.
  • Select, review, and monitor housing assignments of inmates according to proper classification.
  • Sort and deliver incoming inmate mail, opening and searching for money or contraband.
Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must attain certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Jailer within one (1) year of employment.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.
