Description

The Correctional Officer I is responsible for performing specialized law enforcement duties focused on the care and security of inmates, ensuring their constitutional rights and welfare are protected within the County Jail. Responsibilities include the admission and booking of inmates, supervision of trustees, maintaining security within the facility, managing commissary operations, and overseeing the inventory of inmate property and supplies. Additional tasks may involve monitoring surveillance systems, managing emergency protocols, engaging in various life and fire safety activities, and performing communication duties as part of the Extraction Team. Specific duties may vary based on assignment areas, requiring alertness and independent judgment in handling unusual situations. Employees are subject to the typical hazards associated with jail work.

Key Responsibilities

1. Process inmates into the County Jail, ensuring proper booking, searching, and communication of jail rules.

2. Review logs and reports from prior shifts; maintain awareness of inmate population and cell assignments; complete activity logs and reports.

3. Conduct patrols throughout the jail to prevent escapes and maintain order; monitor surveillance cameras and emergency systems.

4. Supervise inmate trustees in various tasks, including meal service, cleaning, and laundry duties.

5. Manage the distribution of supplies and oversee the cafeteria area.

6. Handle inmate correspondence and ensure proper inspection of incoming mail.

7. Prepare and transport inmates for court appearances, medical appointments, and other necessary movements.

8. Perform life safety functions requiring CPR and fire safety training.

9. Assist the public with inquiries regarding inmate status.

10. Maintain compliance with state and local cleaning standards within the facility.

11. Ensure the secure handling and logging of inmate property.

12. Conduct regular population counts and monitor housing assignments according to classification standards.

13. Sort and inspect incoming inmate mail for contraband.

14. Regular and punctual attendance is mandatory.

15. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old.

A High School diploma or GED is required.

Must be a U.S. citizen.

Certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Jailer must be obtained within one year of employment.

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required, with the ability to obtain a State of Texas driver's license within 90 days.
