Job Overview:

The Vision Support Specialist I is appointed by and reports directly to the Program Manager. This role is focused on delivering essential services to children with visual impairments and their families through direct skills training, parental guidance, and case management aimed at enhancing the child's independence and encouraging vocational exploration and growth.

Professionals in this position are responsible for providing direct services and managing a caseload within a specified area, collaborating with community and educational organizations to ensure that each child achieves their unique objectives.

Work at this level is conducted under general supervision with significant mentoring, allowing for some discretion in the application of initiative and independent judgment. Individuals in this role may also offer training and mentorship to fellow specialists. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
- Implementing and documenting high-quality services for children and families in the BCVDDP program. 35%
- Delivering exceptional Direct Skills Training services to children, families, external partners, and BCP staff. 30%
- Ensuring adherence to BCVDDP Program Policies, Procedures, and Quality Assurance standards. 25%
- Engaging in Professional Development to further the mission and services of the BCVDDP. 10%

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with child development principles.

- Understanding of the psychological, social, and pre-vocational challenges faced by visually impaired children.

- Knowledge of counseling methods applicable to children with disabilities.

- Awareness of resources available for children with visual impairments.

- Proficiency in managing caseloads based on defined objectives.

- Competence in maintaining reports and records according to established practices.

- Skill in utilizing personal computers and familiarity with Microsoft Office software.

- Ability to assess and provide suitable counseling, guidance, and support in alignment with the established program plan.

- Capability to develop an individualized program plan with the child and family based on assessment data.

- Proficiency in articulating ideas, instructions, and reports both verbally and in writing.

- Ability to cultivate and sustain effective working relationships with clients, departmental personnel, agency staff, and external organizations.


- Capacity to plan, organize, and evaluate essential functions for optimal outcomes.

- Competence in performing basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculating decimals and percentages; and interpreting graphical data.
