Job Overview:

The Vision Impairment Support Specialist I is appointed by and reports directly to the Program Manager. This role is focused on delivering essential services to children with blindness and visual impairments, along with their families, through direct skills training, parental guidance, and case management aimed at enhancing the child's independence and encouraging vocational exploration and growth.

Individuals in this position provide direct assistance and manage a caseload within a specified area, collaborating with community organizations and educational institutions to ensure that each child achieves their unique objectives.

Work in this capacity is conducted under general oversight and considerable mentoring, allowing for some degree of initiative and independent decision-making.

Employees may also be responsible for training and mentoring fellow specialists. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
- Implementing and documenting high-quality services for children and families. 35%
- Delivering exceptional direct skills training services to children, families, external partners, and internal staff. 30%
- Ensuring adherence to program policies, procedures, and quality assurance standards. 25%
- Engaging in professional development to further the mission and services of the program. 10%

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with child development principles.

- Understanding of the psychological, social, and pre-vocational challenges faced by children with visual impairments.

- Knowledge of counseling methods applicable to children with disabilities.

- Awareness of resources available for children with visual disabilities.

- Proficiency in managing caseloads based on specific objectives.

- Competence in maintaining accurate reports and records.

- Proficient in using personal computers, with experience in the Windows environment and Microsoft Office applications.

- Ability to assess and provide suitable counseling, guidance, and support in line with established program plans.

- Capability to develop individualized program plans with children and families based on assessment data.

- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to convey ideas, instructions, and reports effectively.

- Ability to cultivate and sustain effective working relationships with clients, departmental personnel, agency staff, and external organizations.


- Skills in planning, organizing, and reviewing essential functions for optimal outcomes.

- Proficiency in basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; and interpret graphical data.
