Senior Protection and Control Engineer

Job Overview
In this role, you will be accountable to your designated supervisor for executing intricate engineering tasks and projects that necessitate the application of engineering expertise to achieve assigned goals in a safe, effective, efficient, and economical manner.
Key Responsibilities:
Protection & Control Engineer Duties:
- Conduct and Evaluate relay protection and control operations for electrical substation projects ranging from 4kV to 765KV.
- Develop and Assess P&C scopes for electric substation initiatives.
- Create and/or evaluate P&C engineering settings and designs for electrical substation projects.
- Generate and Review Relay Setting Calculation Sheets, Setting Files, and other relay setting documentation for substation projects.
- Perform area protection analyses and suggest settings for both existing and new transmission line and station protection schemes.
- Model transmission system impedances and execute short circuit fault analyses.
- Engage in activities related to NERC P&C standards, including the preparation and review of PRC-023, FAC-008, and other NERC mandated documents.
- Assess, critique, and provide P&C insights and recommendations on transmission system planning proposals.
- Collaborate with transmission customers and interconnected entities on relevant protection matters.
- Offer engineering assistance for project installation, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Deliver general P&C technical support as required, including interfacing with Telecommunication, Operations, Transmission Region Operations, Station Engineering, Transmission Planning, and Project Management.
- Conduct peer reviews and approve P&C-related work of team members. Oversee and evaluate P&C-related tasks performed by external contractors.
- Identify, clarify, and resolve protection and control challenges through analysis of interruption reports and fault recorder data.
- Contribute to the establishment of system-wide protection standards for transmission and distribution station protection, metering, and control applications.
Technical Proficiency: Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills that position the engineer as a leader within the organization. Remains informed about new products, developments, technologies, procedures, and equipment. Understands and evaluates interconnections between systems and component equipment. Interprets codes and regulations while developing relevant standards.
Leadership & Direction: Provides mentorship and exercises discretion in guiding other engineers. Facilitates and coordinates the work of team members within the group, department, or external entities as necessary to complete all routine engineering tasks. Ensures compliance with company policies, practices, standards, and external regulations. Promotes engineering professionalism and standards while coordinating training sessions.
Planning & Organizational Skills: Participates in the formulation of plans by setting measurable goals, objectives, and requirements for specific responsibilities. Coordinates the development of necessary inputs to establish projected costs for all projects. Proficient in scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budgeting and planning activities. Identifies and initiates corrective actions when objectives are not met.
Problem Solving & Initiative: Identifies, clarifies, and resolves routine and complex issues that may involve analyzing inadequate or conflicting data. Demonstrates the ability to decompose problems into manageable components. Consistently seeks and develops opportunities while presenting innovative ideas and approaches.
Communication Skills: Efficiently coordinates the work of other engineers. Develops, reviews, or prepares reports on complex technical subjects in a clear, concise, and effective manner suitable for management, professional societies, and regulatory bodies. Effectively leads and facilitates meetings.
Decision-Making Abilities: Makes decisions impacting plans and goals based on uncertain inputs and outcomes. Utilizes diverse strategies to make decisions in the absence of a clear framework or where few precedents exist. Analyzes options and risks, leveraging experience and knowledge to assess the implications of decisions.
Business Acumen: Exhibits an understanding of the competitive landscape and how business decisions affect the organizational unit. Recognizes the specific goals and objectives of the unit and is skilled in establishing measurable targets. Effectively manages project budgets using cost management techniques, understanding the impact of decisions on expenses and revenues.
Minimum Qualifications:
Typically requires 6 or more years of relevant engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program; or 4 years of relevant engineering experience with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred.

Compensation Grade: SP20-008
Compensation Range: $94,490.00 USD
