Position: Assistant City Engineer

Overview:

This role involves advanced engineering responsibilities, focusing on technical engineering and project oversight related to the design, approval, and execution of municipal water and wastewater systems, public infrastructure, and the assessment of private development projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Engineering Division's technical staff and engineering inspection teams.
  • Oversee the planning, design, permitting, construction, and maintenance of city infrastructure.
  • Take charge of specific capital projects as designated by the City Engineer.
  • Establish work schedules for engineering initiatives.
  • Evaluate proposed subdivisions and site plans.
  • Prepare and assess permit applications for water, sewer, stormwater, and reclaimed systems.
  • Design selected engineering projects.
  • Review and prepare operational permits for water and sewer systems.
  • Update and maintain utility and public infrastructure design standards.
  • Collaborate with various city departments, consulting engineers, developers, and regulatory bodies on construction matters.
  • Assess utility applications for city right-of-way.
  • Address inquiries from residents, developers, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution is required.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in civil or utility engineering is essential.
  • Experience in the design, construction, and maintenance of sewer and water systems is necessary.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must hold a valid Professional Engineer Registration in Florida or obtain it within six months of employment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with AutoCAD is preferred.

Communication Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships with city employees, officials, and the public.
  • Competence in interpreting plans, specifications, and legal documents related to public works projects.

Reasoning and Problem-Solving:

  • Ability to comprehend safety manuals, work orders, and legal documents.
  • Capability to assign and review work activities effectively.
  • Ability to organize and supervise the work of others while maintaining positive relationships.

Additional Skills:

  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles and procedures.
  • Understanding of public facility design and construction.
  • Familiarity with site plan review and utility development.
  • Ability to prepare and evaluate engineering cost estimates and contractor requests.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple projects concurrently.
  • Working knowledge of municipal budgeting processes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Work Environment:

This position may require the employee to perform tasks in various settings, including office environments and outdoor conditions. Responsibilities may involve physical activities such as lifting, walking, and driving.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift between 15-45 pounds, with vision corrected to meet necessary standards.
