Major Functions:

The County of Volusia is on the lookout for skilled Automotive Technicians to join our Heavy Truck and Equipment shop within the Fleet Management Division.

This role involves essential maintenance and repair tasks for various vehicles, including automobiles, trucks, and specialized equipment. *Please note that this position may close with or without prior notice.

Key Responsibilities:

These responsibilities are illustrative and not exhaustive. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.

  • Regular attendance and punctuality are expected.
  • Compliance with all relevant ordinances is mandatory.
  • Responding to emergency situations as required.
  • Assisting in the maintenance and repair of vehicles under the guidance of senior technicians.

Level I: Assists higher-level technicians with maintenance and repair tasks on heavy vehicles and specialized equipment. Performs routine repairs and adjustments that do not require advanced mechanical skills, such as safety checks and minor preventive maintenance services.

Level II: Takes on more complex mechanical work, diagnosing issues and completing repairs on major systems, including engines and transmissions. Responsible for preparing vehicles for service and auction.

Level III: Performs advanced maintenance tasks requiring significant mechanical expertise, including overhauls and emergency repairs. May involve fabrication and welding duties.


Minimum Requirements:

All levels must achieve a minimum of 80% billable hours of total hours worked. Candidates should possess the necessary hand tools and equipment for the role.

Education, training, or experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Candidates should have a solid understanding of automotive mechanics, including:

  • Methods and materials used in the trade.
  • Principles of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Occupational safety and hazard awareness.
  • Ability to diagnose issues effectively.

Physical Demands:
Ability to perform various physical tasks, including lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs., standing for extended periods, and working in various environmental conditions.
