Role Summary

The Advocate Counselor plays a pivotal role in supporting the mission of Brooklyn Community Services by engaging with high school students who are facing academic challenges. This position is dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for over-aged and under-credited youth, assisting them in navigating their educational journey.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a caseload of 40+ students, providing tailored academic planning and case management services.
  • Conduct weekly individual counseling sessions and daily group counseling, including leading an Advisory Group.
  • Identify barriers to regular school attendance and connect students with necessary resources, including conducting outreach efforts.
  • Guide students in developing actionable post-secondary plans to ensure future success.
  • Offer immediate crisis intervention and mediation support as required.
  • Engage with families through outreach initiatives and parent/guardian meetings to enhance communication and support.
  • Document all interactions and maintain comprehensive case records for each student.
  • Participate in school events such as Parent-Teacher conferences and School Leadership meetings.
  • Assist students with the college application process, providing guidance and support.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required; MSW preferred.
  • Proven experience in case management, particularly with youth and families.
  • Experience in college preparatory programs is essential.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive community.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work from a strength-based perspective in youth and family development.
  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Practices is advantageous.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and teamwork orientation are essential.
  • Completion of fingerprinting and background checks is required.
  • Prior experience in an educational setting is preferred.
