We operate the Brooklyn High School for Leadership and Community Service, a specialized educational institution designed to support high school students who are over-age and under-credited or have previously disengaged from their education. Our Learning-to-Work Program is integral to the school's mission, providing essential academic support, career exploration, and internship opportunities.

Role Summary:

The Advocate Counselor plays a vital role in facilitating the re-engagement of high school students. This position involves delivering individual and group counseling, comprehensive case management, advocacy, and crisis intervention for adolescents facing educational challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage academic planning and case management for a caseload of over 40 students.
  • Conduct weekly individual counseling sessions and daily group counseling, including leading an Advisory Group five days a week.
  • Support students in maintaining regular school attendance by identifying barriers and connecting them with necessary resources.
  • Assist students in formulating actionable post-secondary plans.
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention and mediation support as required.
  • Engage in family outreach and organize parent/guardian meetings as needed.
  • Deliver counseling services to families to enhance communication and support between family members and students.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and case records for all students on the caseload.
  • Participate in school-related events, including Parent-Teacher conferences and School Leadership meetings.
  • Support students through the college application process.
  • Perform all assigned duties, both in-person and remotely, as directed by the Program Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required; MSW preferred.
  • Proven experience in case management and support for youth and families.
  • Experience in college preparatory programs is essential.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that promotes community and belonging.
  • Strong time management, organizational, and communication skills are essential.
  • Dedication to a strength-based approach in youth and family development.
  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Practices is advantageous.
  • Creativity and teamwork are essential attributes for this role.
  • Successful completion of fingerprinting and background checks is required.
  • Prior experience in an educational setting is preferred.
