Position: Peer Specialist

Reports to: Program Director

Work Schedule: Full-Time - 35 Hours per week; Flexibility for Afternoon and Evening hours required

Compensation: $35,000 annually

Employment Status: Non-Exempt

Founded in 1866, Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) is dedicated to empowering individuals and families to achieve their fullest potential, enhance family dynamics, and promote self-sufficiency among adults. With a presence in 28 locations, BCS positively impacts over 20,000 individuals annually.

The Cortelyou Supportive Housing Program is a 46-unit initiative situated in Flatbush Brooklyn, specifically designed for young adults aged 18-25 who are experiencing Serious and Persistent Mental Illness and have a history of homelessness. A significant portion of the residents identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. This program provides a secure and affirming living environment, alongside supportive services aimed at guiding young adults towards long-term stability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with program staff to assist residents in managing budgets, shopping, meal planning, and maintaining cleanliness.
  • Engage with community service providers to address challenges that affect residents' ability to sustain supportive housing.
  • Document progress notes within 24 hours following individual sessions.
  • Accompany clients to various appointments as directed by the Program Director (including medical, psychiatric, and social services).
  • Participate in community recreational activities to enhance socialization skills among consumers.
  • Connect clients with peer support and self-help recovery resources.
  • Educate residents on effective use of public transportation.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate group sessions as instructed.
  • Assist in coordinating resident move-ins and move-outs.
  • Provide support services to community residents and church social initiatives.
  • Engage in the organization of fire drills.
  • Attend all required meetings, trainings, seminars, workshops, and case conferences, completing all assigned tasks and special projects.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • Peer specialist certification is preferred.
  • Experience working with LGBTQIIA youth is essential.
  • Candidates must possess lived experience of homelessness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • Basic computer and data entry proficiency is required.
  • A commitment to assist others in achieving recovery and wellness goals through lived experience.
  • OMH Fingerprinting and background check are mandatory.
