Overview

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) operates under the guidance of the Physician, Nurse Supervisor, and/or Practice/Office Manager. This role involves recognizing patient needs and symptoms proactively. The LPN delivers care to patients as directed by the physician, which includes preparing patients for examinations, assisting during treatments, coordinating diagnostic tests and follow-up care, and documenting treatment in medical records. Additionally, the LPN plays a crucial role in patient and family education. The position requires competency and skills to cater to patients across all age groups, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

All LPNs are expected to be licensed, knowledgeable, and adhere to the nursing practices as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, while implementing the Nursing Practice Standards and Code for Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses established by the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses, Inc. (NFLPN). As part of the patient services team, the LPN is expected to uphold the voice of the patient, adhere to system policies and procedures, and support service excellence goals.

  • Professional Practice and Responsibility: Uphold exemplary practice and outcomes, ensuring compliance with Nursing Practice Standards and the NFLPN Code.
  • Health Promotion: Utilize evidence-based practices to promote health while ensuring individualized care through effective partnerships.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Coordinate safe, quality patient care delivery and documentation, fostering a respectful and inclusive clinical environment.
  • Professional Development: Complete ongoing competency assessments and mandatory education, serving as a mentor for other practical nurses and unlicensed staff.
  • Evidence-Based Practice: Advocate for nursing research and performance improvement, participating in shared decision-making groups.
  • Practice Operations: Provide direct patient care as directed, contributing to financial viability through service quality.
  • Patient Liaison: Deliver relationship-based, patient-centered care that respects population-specific characteristics in a culturally sensitive manner.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Education:
  • Graduate from a practical or vocational nursing program.

Required Minimum Experience:
  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.
  • Experience in an ambulatory or outpatient setting preferred.
  • Hospital-based experience may substitute in some cases.
  • Specific experience in practice specialty required.

Required Minimum Skills:
  • Organizational skills and time management to ensure patient comfort and satisfaction.
  • Attention to detail and strong interpersonal skills for positive interactions with staff, providers, and patients.
  • Effective communication skills in verbal and written English, with basic computer proficiency.
  • Adherence to the WellStar Credo and Code of Conduct.

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
  • Licensed Practical Nurse required.
  • Basic Life Support certification required.
  • BLS Instructor certification required.
  • BLS Provisional certification required.

Additional Licenses and Certifications:
  • Current/active license as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Georgia required.
  • Current BLS card from the American Heart Association required prior to hire.
  • ACLS/PALS may be required in specific practice areas.
