Overview

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) operates under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Nurse Manager, adhering to the LPN Scope of Practice. The role involves delivering comprehensive care tailored to the patient's age, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and educational needs. The LPN is accountable for ensuring high-quality care delivery, which includes preparing patients for examinations, assisting in treatments, coordinating diagnostic tests, and documenting care in medical records. Additionally, the LPN plays a vital role in patient and family education, attends staff meetings, participates in training sessions, and engages in ongoing professional development. This position may also involve mentoring newly hired LPN colleagues.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • DIRECT PATIENT CARE: Assess and manage the total needs of patients in accordance with physician orders, under RN supervision.
  • Routine Nursing Procedures: Execute nursing tasks to fulfill patient needs while being supervised by an RN.
  • Productivity Standards: Meet established productivity benchmarks.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrate proficiency in accessing and de-accessing ports, including flushing lines and maintaining sterile techniques.
  • Medication Administration: Administer medications as per defined scope for WellStar Health System.
  • Training and Supervision: Seek guidance from leadership when necessary.
  • Delegation: Assign tasks to unlicensed staff as appropriate within their scope of practice.
  • Patient-Centered Care: Provide culturally sensitive care that respects the unique characteristics of each patient.
  • Care Coordination: Collaborate with the RN and other team members to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Patient Education: Act as an educator to promote self-care and caregiver support.
  • Staff Development: Participate in the orientation and training of new staff and nursing students.
  • Continuing Education: Engage in ongoing education and training as required.
  • Documentation: Ensure accurate and timely completion of required documentation.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Education
  • Practical Nursing Diploma Required.
Required Minimum Experience

  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.
  • Experience in oncology or outpatient settings preferred.
Required Minimum Skills

  • Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient assessment and clinical skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency required.
Required Minimum License(s) And Certification(s)

  • Licensed Practical Nurse Required.
  • Basic Life Support Certification Required.
  • BLS Instructor Certification Required.
  • BLS Provisional Certification Required.
