Overview

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) operates under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Nurse Manager, adhering to the LPN Scope of Practice. The LPN is responsible for delivering patient care that encompasses age-appropriate interventions to address physical, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and educational needs. This role includes the coordination and provision of high-quality care, which involves preparing patients for examinations, assisting with treatments, coordinating diagnostic tests, and documenting care in medical records. The LPN also plays a vital role in patient and family education and is expected to participate in staff meetings, in-services, special projects, and ongoing education. Additionally, LPNs may serve as mentors for newly hired colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Functions include:
  • Direct Patient Care: Assess and assist in managing the comprehensive needs of patients following physician orders with RN oversight, utilizing the nursing process.
  • Routine Nursing Procedures: Perform necessary nursing tasks under RN supervision to meet patient needs.
  • Productivity Standards: Meet established productivity benchmarks.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrate proficiency in accessing and de-accessing ports, including flushing lines and maintaining sterile techniques.
  • Medication Administration: Exhibit knowledge and skill in administering medications as defined within the scope of practice.
  • Training and Supervision: Seek guidance from leadership as needed and may delegate tasks to unlicensed staff appropriately.
  • Patient-Centered Care: Provide culturally sensitive, relationship-based care that aligns with the specific characteristics of the patient population.
  • Coordination of Care: Collaborate with RN and team members to coordinate services and inform relevant parties of any changes in patient conditions.
  • Patient Education: Act as an educator to promote self-care and support for patients and caregivers, utilizing teach-back methods to ensure understanding.
  • Staff Development: Participate in the orientation and education of new staff and nursing students, and engage in continuing education as required.
  • Documentation: Ensure accurate and timely completion of required documentation and adhere to regulatory guidelines.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Education: Practical Nursing Diploma is required.
  • Experience: Previous healthcare experience is preferred, particularly in oncology or outpatient settings.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills, along with excellent assessment and clinical abilities.
  • Communication: Proficient written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Technical Skills: Basic computer skills are required.
