Overview
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) operates under the guidance of the Physician, Nurse Supervisor, and/or Practice/Office Manager. This role involves identifying patient needs and symptoms proactively. The LPN delivers care as directed by the physician, which includes preparing patients for examinations, assisting during procedures, coordinating diagnostic tests, and documenting treatments in medical records. Additionally, the LPN aids in educating patients and their families. The position requires competency and skills to cater to patients across all age groups, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
All LPNs are expected to be licensed, knowledgeable, and adhere to the nursing practices as defined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, while implementing the Nursing Practice Standards and Code established by the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses, Inc. (NFLPN). As a vital member of the patient services team, the LPN is expected to advocate for the patient, comply with system policies and procedures, and support service excellence goals.

- Operates within the scope and adheres to Nursing Practice Standards and Code as defined by the NFLPN.
- Encourages health promotion through clinical care using evidence-based practices, applying analytical and critical thinking to ensure individualized care; collaborates effectively to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
- Utilizes current clinical practice standards.
- Teamwork and Collaboration
- Coordinates the provision and documentation of safe, quality patient care that aligns with the professional care delivery model. This includes diverse and inclusive interdisciplinary communication methods, timely documentation, and fostering a respectful, inclusive clinical environment.
- Exhibits teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a fiscally responsible manner that promotes the recruitment and retention of healthcare team members.
- Professional Development and Initiative
- Completes all initial and ongoing professional competency assessments, mandatory education, and licensure requirements.
- Serves as a mentor and/or preceptor for other practical nurses and unlicensed staff or students to ensure a qualified workforce, modeling professional nursing practices and fostering a healthy work environment.
- May delegate tasks to unlicensed staff as appropriate and within their scope of practice.
- Evidence-Based Practice and Research
- Advocates for evidence-based practice, nursing research, and performance improvement in nursing. Participates in shared decision-making groups and committees as able.
- Adheres to all healthcare system/organizational policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards, including TJC Patient Safety Goals and WellStar Health Systems' safety protocols.
- Engages in data collection and formulates relevant clinical questions to advance evidence-based practice. Consults with experts and utilizes appropriate resources to address practice inquiries.
- Operational Duties
- Provides direct patient care as directed by the healthcare provider.
- Proactively plans for patient care across the continuum through pre-visit planning processes.
- Contributes to financial viability through service quality and clinical excellence.
- May act as a liaison with nursing leadership regarding clinical operations and quality initiatives.
- Patient Advocacy and Liaison
- Delivers relationship-based, patient-centered care that is sensitive to population-specific characteristics (e.g., age, gender, disease, etc.).
- Partners with patients, significant others, and/or family members to create a comfortable and safe environment for care delivery, prioritizing the patient's goals in the care plan.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education
- Graduation from a practical or vocational nursing program.
- Previous healthcare experience preferred.
- Experience in an ambulatory or outpatient setting preferred.
- In some cases, hospital-based experience may be acceptable.
- Specific experience in practice specialty required.
- Must be organized and manage time effectively to ensure patient comfort and satisfaction.
- Attention to detail and strong interpersonal skills to interact positively with staff, providers, and patients.
- Ability to communicate and comprehend verbal and written English, utilize technology to support clinical care, and possess basic computer skills.
- Adherence to the WellStar Credo and Code of Conduct is essential.
- Licensed Practical Nurse required.
- Basic Life Support certification required.
- BLS Instructor certification required.
- BLS Provisional certification required.
- Current/active license as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Georgia required.
- Must possess a current BLS card from the American Heart Association prior to hire date required.
- ACLS/PALS may be required in specific practice areas.
