Position Summary:
We are seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join our team. This role necessitates proven expertise in the deployment of automation solutions utilizing PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA platforms.

Key Responsibilities:
The Senior Controls Engineer will engage directly with clients and lead a team of engineers at Wunderlich-Malec to ascertain requirements, develop specifications, and implement, test, and qualify automation solutions. This leadership position demands exceptional problem-solving skills, effective project management capabilities, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to fostering partnerships. Success in this role is demonstrated through the ability to secure repeat business from both new and existing clients.

Essential Duties:
The ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering innovative automation solutions and establishing design standards, either independently or as a team leader. Responsibilities include:

  • Conceptualizing, detailing, and implementing control systems for industrial processes that align with client specifications.
  • Developing control system architectures and selecting appropriate components.
  • Creating schematic diagrams and system documentation.
  • Programming controllers (PLC, DCS, RTU) and process visualization (HMI/SCADA).
  • Developing databases for archiving and displaying historical system data.
  • Implementing and commissioning control systems at client facilities.

Knowledge of programming languages such as Ladder, Sequential Function Chart, and Structured Text is essential. Familiarity with standard programming languages like VBA, .NET, and SQL for HMI/SCADA system development is preferred.

For larger systems, experience with industrial networking to connect control system components and instrumentation is advantageous. The Senior Controls Engineer will design and implement various communication systems using industrial protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, and Modbus.

Project Management Responsibilities:
This role often entails managing project execution plans, work breakdown structures, budgets, task prioritization, scheduling, and reporting. Responsibilities also include overseeing daily operations of projects valued up to $1M and ensuring overall project profitability.

Qualifications:
Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical/Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science is required.
Experience: A minimum of 15 years of relevant experience is preferred, including:

  • In-depth knowledge of PLC hardware/software platforms.
  • Expertise in HMI/SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with DCS platforms.
  • Understanding of electrical schematics and power distribution.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Leadership experience in providing control system solutions.
  • Mentoring capabilities for junior engineers.
  • Proven track record in managing automation projects in the Life Science sector.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in IT/OT networking and automation protocols.
  • Experience with relational databases.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
