Patient Coordination Specialist

The Patient Coordination Specialist plays a vital role in liaising with referring physician practices to gather essential clinical data, verify patient insurance details, secure authorizations from insurance providers, and manage patient appointment scheduling in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
A typical day for a Patient Coordination Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Managing precertification processes by collecting and inputting insurance information into the system.
- Utilizing the Insurance Eligibility Verification system and guiding patients through the process.
- Confirming insurance benefits and coverage by communicating with insurance companies.
- Gathering necessary insurance details for precertification of medical procedures.
- Coordinating patient appointments effectively.
- Requesting and obtaining medical records and pathology reports from various healthcare facilities.
- Maintaining accurate computer records to ensure the integrity of patient histories and appointment schedules.
- Organizing all patient appointments and providing daily schedules to relevant departments.
- Collecting patient co-pays and deductibles, ensuring proper posting in the financial system.
- Processing requests for medical records efficiently.
- Recognizing the unique needs of the patient population and tailoring care accordingly, including effective communication with patients and caregivers.
- Complying with the standards outlined in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in health insurance verification and precertification processes.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Familiarity with medical terminology.
