Process Control Engineering Specialist

American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) stands at the forefront of battery metal and critical materials innovation and commercialization.
Our Pilot Plant is set to be the first fully integrated application of our multi-step processing system, focusing on mechanical processing, physical separations, chemical extractions, and the production of commercial-scale battery metals. These metals will be reintegrated into the battery manufacturing supply chain, promoting a low-cost, environmentally sustainable, and domestically sourced closed-loop circular economy.
ABOUT THE ROLE
In the capacity of our I&C Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and implementation of top-tier control systems tailored for the chemical processing systems of our proprietary lithium-ion battery recycling facility and primary resource extraction technologies.
This role requires collaboration with our R&D team, plant operations team, and various internal and external specialists to ensure the effective design, construction, and operation of our facilities.
The ideal candidate will possess experience in the research & development, design, installation, commissioning, and operation of pioneering facilities.A passion for designing, implementing, and maintaining efficient automation systems for chemical manufacturing processes is essential, along with a commitment to ensuring quality control of outputs, specifying equipment, and developing monitoring protocols.
The candidate should be adept at problem-solving and exhibit a strong interest in scaling processes from bench-scale to pilot or pre-commercial scales.
This includes a continuous evaluation of current processing steps and the proposal and development of next-generation solutions aimed at enhancing system performance and operability.
This position will report to our Automation Engineering Lead.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide instrumentation & controls design services across multiple sites during the design, construction, commissioning, and startup phases of projects, including the development of instrument lists and detailed construction documents.
- Engage in initial equipment conceptual development and contribute to equipment design while balancing product specifications, process control requirements, layout complexity, cost, quality, and lead-time constraints.
- Develop specifications for the procurement of low voltage control equipment and instrumentation for mechanical, chemical, and other process systems.
- Prepare and review wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and layout drawings for VFDs, PLCs, and other low-voltage automation systems.
- Ensure design coordination and quality to support the installation, startup, and commissioning of process automation systems.
- Develop or assist in the creation of calibration and maintenance programs for control equipment and instrumentation.
- Provide technical feedback and test plans to support operations and R&D teams for continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with program management and construction teams to implement efficient designs safely and promptly.
- Support PLC and SCADA development teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Participate in the development of operational sequences and/or control narratives.
- Engage in hazard analyses and FEMAs on process systems.
- Review and provide feedback on designs executed by external design firms.
- Manage contract resources as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering or equivalent industry experience in Instrumentation and Controls.
- A minimum of 4 years of engineering/design experience focusing on industrial automation systems.
- Familiarity with a range of instrument manufacturers and technologies.
- Proficient in interpreting and producing Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID).
- Strong collaborative skills in a team environment.
- Background in chemical processing (Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Metals & Mining, Mineral Processing, etc.).
- Licensed Professional Engineer in Control Systems.
- Experience with Autodesk CAD programs (Plant3D, Revit).
- 60% of the time involves prolonged sitting and standing.
- 40% of the time involves walking, moving up and down stairs, bending, and stooping.

- Ability to lift over 50 lbs. with assistance.
