Under the administrative supervision of the Histology Supervisor, the Tissue Processing Specialist collaborates with Clinical Pathologists in the handling and analysis of specimens.
Key responsibilities encompass the embedding of biological samples, microtomy, staining procedures, equipment upkeep, cytology preparation, and support during bone marrow examinations.
This role involves executing designated histological tasks on tissue specimens, bodily fluids, and bone marrow samples under the oversight of the Pathologist on duty.
Administrative Responsibilities:
specimen accessioning, storage management, report documentation, and various clerical functions.
Occasional support tasks will be necessary to assist the Histology Section in laboratory operations, including specimen collection, sample management, sending samples to reference laboratories, quality control documentation, and setting up autopsies.
Role Scope
The Clinical Laboratory operates continuously, providing essential laboratory services to a diverse patient population.
A significant challenge in this role is to successfully complete a training program lasting one to two years and achieve licensure as a Specialty Technician - Histology by the relevant state authority.
The Tissue Processing Specialist will execute assigned tasks, ensure accurate specimen identification and data entry, and assist Clinical Pathologists in their primary duties within the Histology Section.
Any issues must be promptly communicated to the Histology Supervisor and/or Pathologist(s) on duty. The primary responsibilities include 1) assisting the Pathologist with specimen handling and clinical procedures 2) receiving and logging specimens 3) managing specimen and record storage 4) performing delegated technical histology tasks 5) general administrative duties and 6) training histology staff as required.The incumbent must maintain the technical knowledge and skills necessary for daily tasks. When assisting with clinical procedures, consideration of the patient's age is essential. Effective communication with a diverse patient demographic and their families during special procedures is expected. Exemplary customer service behavior is required at all times.
Compliance with all safety protocols in the laboratory and hospital is mandatory. A thorough understanding of all required procedures must be maintained.
Competency in job-related skills must be demonstrated annually.
Accession specimens in the appropriate Laboratory Information Systems and utilize the Hospital Information System to gather clinical and demographic data as per established policies and procedures.
This position involves direct patient interaction.

Education:
An associate degree or higher is preferred. Coursework in anatomy/physiology, chemistry, and biology is advantageous. Proficiency in the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking, is required.
Experience:
No prior experience is necessary. Experience as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant in Histology or as a Clinical Laboratory Histology Technician is preferred.
License(s):
Requires submission of a current or individual application for laboratory licensure to the relevant state authority within 30 days of hire.
Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a state license for Laboratory Assistant within 7 months of hire.
Requires the ability to obtain and maintain licensure as a Histologic Technician within 30 months of employment.
National accreditation as a Histotechnician is preferred.

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, and complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
