American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) stands at the forefront of battery metal and critical materials technology innovation and commercialization.

Our Pilot Plant is set to be the first fully integrated execution of our multi-step processing system, focusing on mechanical processing, physical separations, chemical extractions, and the production of commercial-scale battery metals. These metals will be reintegrated into the battery manufacturing supply chain, promoting a low-cost, environmentally sustainable, and domestically sourced closed-loop circular economy.

ABOUT THE ROLE
As an Instrumentation and Controls Design Engineer, you will be responsible for crafting and executing top-tier control systems for the chemical processing systems within our proprietary lithium-ion battery recycling facility and primary resource extraction technologies.

This role requires collaboration with our R&D team, plant operations personnel, and various internal and external specialists to ensure the effective design, construction, and operation of our facilities.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in research & development, design, installation, commissioning, and operation of pioneering facilities.

We seek someone who is enthusiastic about designing, implementing, and maintaining efficient automation systems for chemical manufacturing processes, ensuring output quality, specifying equipment, and developing monitoring protocols.

The candidate should be a problem-solver with a strong interest in scaling processes from bench-scale to pilot or pre-commercial scales, with a continuous focus on evaluating current processing steps and proposing next-generation solutions to enhance system performance and operability.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide instrumentation & controls design services across multiple sites during the design, construction, commissioning, and startup phases of projects, including developing instrument lists and detailed construction documents.
  • Engage in initial equipment conceptual development, offering insights on equipment design while balancing product specifications, process control requirements, layout complexity, cost, quality, and lead-time constraints.
  • Create specifications for the procurement of low voltage controls equipment and instrumentation for mechanical, chemical, and other process systems.
  • Prepare and review wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and layout drawings for VFDs, PLCs, and other low-voltage automation systems.
  • Ensure design coordination and quality to support the installation, startup, and commissioning of process automation systems.
  • Develop or assist in creating calibration and maintenance programs for controls equipment and instrumentation.
  • Support operations and R&D teams by providing technical feedback and test plans aimed at continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with program management and construction teams to safely and efficiently implement designs.
  • Assist PLC and SCADA development teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the development of sequences of operations and/or control narratives.
  • Participate in hazard analyses and FEMAs on process systems.
  • Review and provide feedback on designs executed by external design firms.
  • Manage contract resources as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering or equivalent industry experience in Instrumentation and Controls.
  • 4+ years of engineering/design experience with a focus on industrial automation systems.
  • Familiarity with various instrument manufacturers and technologies.
  • Ability to interpret and produce Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID).
  • Positive collaboration skills in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in chemical processing sectors such as Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Metals & Mining, or Mineral Processing.
LICENSES
Licensed Professional Engineer in Control Systems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • 60% of the time spent in prolonged sitting and standing.
  • 40% involves walking, moving up and down stairs, bending, and stooping.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. with assistance.
