American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) stands at the forefront of battery metal and critical materials innovation and commercialization.

Our Pilot Plant in Fernley, Nevada is set to be the first fully integrated implementation of our multi-step processing system, focusing on mechanical processing, physical separations, chemical extractions, and the production of battery metals at a commercial scale. These metals will be reintegrated into the battery manufacturing supply chain, promoting a sustainable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly closed-loop circular economy.


ABOUT THE ROLE

In the capacity of our I&C Design Engineer, you will be tasked with the design and execution of top-tier control systems for the chemical processing operations of our proprietary lithium-ion battery recycling facility and primary resource extraction technologies.

This role requires collaboration with our R&D team, plant operations personnel, and various internal and external specialists to ensure the effective design, construction, and operation of our facilities.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in research & development, design, installation, commissioning, and operation of pioneering facilities.

A passion for designing, implementing, and maintaining efficient automation systems for chemical manufacturing processes is essential, along with a commitment to ensuring quality control of outputs, specifying equipment, and developing monitoring protocols.

The successful candidate will be a problem-solver with a strong interest in scaling processes from bench-scale to pilot or pre-commercial levels.

This includes a continuous focus on assessing current processing steps and proposing innovative solutions to enhance system performance and operability.

This position will report to our Automation Engineering Lead.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide instrumentation & controls design services across multiple sites during the design, construction, commissioning, and startup phases of projects, including the development of instrument lists and detailed construction documents.
  • Engage in initial equipment conceptual development and contribute to equipment design while balancing product specifications, process control requirements, layout complexity, cost, quality, and lead-time constraints.
  • Create specifications for the procurement of low voltage control equipment and instrumentation for mechanical, chemical, and other process systems.
  • Prepare and review wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and layout drawings for VFDs, PLCs, and other low-voltage automation systems.
  • Ensure design coordination and quality to support the installation, startup, and commissioning of process automation systems.
  • Develop or assist in the creation of calibration and maintenance programs for control equipment and instrumentation.
  • Support operations and R&D teams by providing technical feedback and test plans aimed at continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with program management and construction teams to implement efficient designs safely and swiftly.
  • Assist PLC and SCADA development teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the development of sequences of operations and/or control narratives.
  • Participate in hazard analyses and FEMAs related to process systems.
  • Review and provide feedback on designs executed by external design firms.
  • Manage contract resources as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Required Qualifications

  • A background in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering or equivalent industry experience in Instrumentation and Controls.
  • A minimum of 4 years of engineering/design experience focused on industrial automation systems.
  • Familiarity with a variety of instrument manufacturers and technologies.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and producing Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID).
  • Strong collaborative skills in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in chemical processing (Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Metals & Mining, Mineral Processing, etc.).
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Control Systems.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk CAD programs (Plant3D, Revit).
Physical Requirements

  • 60% of the time involves prolonged sitting and standing.
  • 40% involves walking, moving up and down stairs, bending, and stooping.


Lifting

Lifting >50 lbs. with assistance.
