Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Histology Supervisor, the Tissue Processing Specialist collaborates with Clinical Pathologists in the preparation and analysis of biological specimens.

Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities encompass embedding tissue samples, performing microtomy, executing staining procedures, maintaining laboratory equipment, preparing cytological specimens, and assisting with bone marrow examinations.

The role involves conducting histological analyses on body tissues, fluids, and bone marrow samples under the oversight of the on-duty Pathologist.


Administrative Duties Include:
specimen accessioning, storage management, report documentation, and various clerical tasks.

Occasional support tasks may be required to assist the Histology Section, including specimen collection, handling, sending samples to reference laboratories, quality control documentation, and preparing for autopsies.

Work Environment
The Clinical Laboratory operates 24/7, providing essential laboratory services to a diverse patient population.

The primary challenge of this role is to successfully complete a one to two-year training program and achieve licensure as a Specialty Technician in Histology by the State of Nevada.

The Tissue Processing Specialist is responsible for completing assigned tasks, ensuring accurate specimen identification and data entry, and assisting Clinical Pathologists in their duties within the Histology Section. Any issues encountered must be communicated promptly to the Histology Supervisor or Pathologist on duty.

Core Responsibilities Include:
1) Assisting the Pathologist with specimen grossing and clinical procedures
2) Receiving and logging specimens
3) Managing specimen and record storage
4) Performing delegated technical histology procedures
5) Executing general clerical tasks
6) Training histology staff as assigned.

The incumbent must maintain the technical knowledge and skills necessary for daily tasks. When assisting with clinical procedures, consideration of the patient's age is essential. Effective communication with a diverse patient population and their families is expected during special procedures. A commitment to positive customer service is paramount.

Compliance with all safety protocols in the laboratory and hospital is required. Comprehensive knowledge of all procedures is necessary, and competency in work-related skills must be demonstrated annually.

Specimens must be accessioned in the appropriate Laboratory Information Systems, and the Hospital Information System must be accessed to gather clinical and demographic information as required by established policies and procedures.

Maintaining corporate compliance by adhering to related policies and procedures, particularly regarding confidentiality, is essential. This position involves direct patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: An Associate's degree or higher is preferred. Courses in anatomy/physiology, chemistry, and biology are advantageous. Proficiency in the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking, is required.

Experience:
No prior experience is necessary. Experience as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant in Histology or as a Clinical Laboratory Histology Technician is preferred.

Licensure:
A current application for Nevada Laboratory licensure must be submitted within 30 days of hire. The ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada license for Laboratory Assistant within 7 months of hire is required. Licensure as a Nevada Histologic Technician must be obtained within 30 months of employment. National accreditation as a Histotechnician is preferred.

Certification:
None required.

Computer Skills:
Must possess or be able to acquire within 90 days the computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, and complete online benefits enrollment.
