American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) stands at the forefront of battery metal and critical materials technology innovation and commercialization.

Our Pilot Plant is set to be the pioneering integrated implementation of our multi-step processing train, focusing on the comprehensive mechanical processing, physical separations, chemical extractions, and production of commercial-scale battery metals. These metals will be reintegrated into the battery manufacturing supply chain, promoting a low-cost, environmentally sustainable, and domestically sourced closed-loop circular economy.

ABOUT THE ROLE
As an I&C Design Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to architect and execute state-of-the-art control systems for the chemical processing systems of our proprietary lithium-ion battery recycling facility and primary resource extraction technologies.

This role requires collaboration with our R&D team, plant operations team, and various internal and external specialists to ensure the effective design, construction, and operation of our facilities.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in research & development, design, installation, commissioning, and operations of first-of-kind facilities. A passion for designing, implementing, and maintaining efficient automation systems for chemical manufacturing processes is essential, along with ensuring quality control of outputs, specifying equipment, and developing monitoring protocols.

The candidate should be a problem-solver with a strong interest in scaling processes from bench-scale to pilot or pre-commercial scales, continuously evaluating current processing steps and proposing innovative solutions to enhance system performance and operability.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide Instrumentation & Controls design services across multiple sites during the design, construction, commissioning, and startup phases of projects, including developing instrument lists and detailed construction documents.
  • Engage in initial equipment conceptual development and contribute to equipment design while balancing product specifications, process control requirements, layout complexity, cost, quality, and lead-time constraints.
  • Develop specifications for the procurement of low voltage controls equipment and instrumentation for mechanical, chemical, and other process systems.
  • Prepare and review wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and layout drawings for VFDs, PLCs, and other low-voltage automation systems.
  • Ensure design coordination and quality to support the installation, startup, and commissioning of process automation systems.
  • Develop or assist in the creation of calibration and maintenance programs for controls equipment and instrumentation.
  • Support operations and R&D teams by providing technical feedback and test plans for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with program management and construction teams to safely and efficiently implement designs.
  • Assist PLC and SCADA development teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Participate in the formulation of sequences of operations and/or control narratives.
  • Engage in hazard analyses and FEMAs on process systems.
  • Review and provide feedback on designs executed by external design firms.
  • Manage contract resources as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering or equivalent industry experience in Instrumentation and Controls.
  • 4+ years of engineering/design experience focusing on industrial automation systems.
  • Familiarity with a variety of instrument manufacturers and technologies.
  • Ability to interpret and produce Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID).
  • Positive collaboration skills in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in chemical processing (Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Metals & Mining, Mineral Processing, etc.).

Licensed Professional Engineer: Control Systems

  • 60% prolonged sitting and standing.
