Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Environmental Control Specialist to join our team at the City of Reno. As a key member of our environmental services department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the quality of our water and wastewater systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Calibrate, maintain, and operate water and wastewater monitoring equipment, including flow, pH, and conductivity meters, as well as automatic samplers.
  • Conduct water, storm water, and wastewater field tests for flow, pH, conductance, and other physical and chemical characteristics.
  • Review and evaluate industrial wastewater monitoring reports to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Conduct surveys of industrial users' facilities to determine compliance with regulations and identify sources of illegal discharges into public sewer and storm water systems.
  • Collect water, storm water, and wastewater samples to meet local, state, and federal monitoring requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of water, storm water, and wastewater quality reports for submission to local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Operate computer and software applications to manage and maintain storm water and wastewater quality data.
  • Respond to customer inquiries regarding water quality and industrial pretreatment requirements.
  • Assist Environmental Control Officers in the cleanup of sewage, chemical, and petroleum product spills.
  • Perform and verify mathematical calculations and measurements submitted by commercial users to ensure proper allowances.
  • Read water meters as necessary.
Requirements
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college-level coursework in environmental studies, engineering, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Two years of responsible technical environmental control or wastewater treatment experience.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Technician-level Emergency Response certification issued by OSHA.
Working Environment

The Environmental Control Specialist will work in a field and office environment, traveling from site to site, and working around traffic. The position requires exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions.

The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. They will also possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with customers, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
