Director, Building Maintenance & Engineering (Regular, Full-Time)

Facility Engineering

Reporting to the Associate VP, Facilities & Sustainability, the Director of Building Maintenance & Engineering is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for all activities associated with building system operations, maintenance, and engineering. This role involves developing and executing the maintenance and operations strategy for the current campus and future assets. The Director collaborates with the Associate VP of Facilities to establish and review technical specifications and requirements for existing and upcoming buildings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer technical expertise and operational support during the planning, development, pre-construction, construction, and commissioning phases of construction projects and exhibitions.
  • Formulate, implement, and assess departmental goals, plans, and strategies.
  • Define and execute strategies for the maintenance and operations of buildings and systems.
  • Evaluate the condition of facilities, building systems, and campus to ensure compliance with established policies, guidelines, and applicable laws.
  • Plan, assign, and oversee work, including corrective and preventive maintenance activities, in line with established policies and regulations.
  • Supervise and review the work of staff and contractors to ensure quality and completeness align with departmental standards and expectations.
  • Manage the work order process, including scheduling, communication, report generation, ensuring that project quality and completeness meet departmental standards.
  • Establish departmental priorities based on maintenance and safety needs, as well as staff requests.
  • Develop and implement strategies for the efficient use of staff and contractors based on departmental priorities.
  • Conduct regular meetings with staff and contractors to review work priorities, performance metrics, project status, and identify areas for efficiency improvements.
  • Communicate and clarify existing or new work procedures, policies, and guidelines.
  • Oversee vendor selection, project scope, contract development, and execution.
  • Enforce established safety guidelines within the department.
  • Identify and propose renovations and upgrades to facilities, campus, or building systems.
  • Ensure quality control and assurance measures for all work performed by maintenance and operational staff and contractors.
  • Manage the budget allocated for Engineering and Building Maintenance, including forecasting for budget submissions and monitoring expenditures.
  • Evaluate work, product, customer service standards, and performance goals to initiate improvements and enhance service levels.
  • Oversee projects assigned to the Facilities department.
  • Lead the Engineering and Maintenance Operations teams, including hiring, onboarding, training, evaluating, and managing disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Perform additional duties or special projects as assigned.
  • Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Facility Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7 to 10 years of experience in a similar role.
