Position Overview

The Executive Vice President, Engagement Strategy is responsible for identifying, formulating, and executing comprehensive engagement initiatives across the organization. This role aims to broaden the German Marshall Fund's (GMF) outreach to diverse audiences, enhance visibility, and foster innovative connections with donors and stakeholders. The focus is on expanding engagement to include various media outlets, influential leaders, policymakers, and funding entities on both sides of the Atlantic. Additionally, this position seeks to cultivate strategic alliances with new benefactors and global partners that align with GMF's mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Craft and implement GMF's comprehensive donor engagement framework that aligns with the organization's strategic objectives; identify prospective donors and partners, particularly targeting high-net-worth individuals and corporate collaborations. Promote strategic synergies between content creation, events, leadership initiatives, governmental relations, and fundraising efforts.
  • Lead and manage multiple creative teams in accordance with GMF's core values; establish standards for recruiting, mentoring, assessing, and ensuring accountability for high-quality content creators and deliverers.
  • As part of the executive leadership team, provide strategic counsel to the GMF President regarding external engagement tactics; deliver quarterly updates to the Board of Directors and maintain ongoing communication with Board members involved in outreach and fundraising activities.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with fellow executive team members to ensure alignment of donor interests and marketing strategies across all GMF external engagement platforms, including programs, publications, events, and communications.
  • Anticipate GMF's engagement requirements for both the short and long term; stay informed about emerging trends in media and related sectors and their implications for GMF's strategic goals.
  • Develop and implement strategies that resonate with GMF's brand and enhance content offerings across both established and new platforms, aiming to attract fresh audiences while deepening connections with existing ones; address the needs of diverse demographics, including various ethnicities, age groups, and educational backgrounds; utilize data-driven insights to guide strategic decisions.
  • Ensure adherence to GMF standards across all events, publications, and activities in the U.S. and Europe by educating internal stakeholders on design principles and ensuring compliance with brand guidelines.
  • Formulate strategies and oversee rapid response initiatives that incorporate insights from subject matter experts.
  • Supervise the creation of innovative messaging and materials to enhance GMF's outreach, including the expansion of donor networks.
  • Identify opportunities to forge new connections and strengthen existing partnerships, such as securing speakers for events.
  • Maximize media engagement and cultivate relationships with partners, media representatives, influencers, and community leaders.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant government regulations.
  • Support the President's communications, including speeches and opinion pieces.
  • Monitor and integrate trends in content creation, publishing, and emerging communication technologies.
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 15 years of senior-level experience in external relations, preferably in an international context.
  • Demonstrated creativity, innovation, and a passion for GMF's mission.
  • Proven ability to foster a culture of engagement across the organization, including with the Board of Trustees.
  • Exceptional presentation skills for diverse audiences, including teams, stakeholders, and public forums.
  • Experience in developing and executing organization-wide campaigns that ensure strategic alignment.
  • Proven success in leading engagement initiatives in dynamic environments.
  • Expertise in communication and brand strategy, along with media relations oversight.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional setting, managing input from various stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing within a matrixed international organization and leading through transitions.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring staff across communication disciplines.
  • Strong background in social media, audience data analysis, and CRM systems applied to decision-making.
  • Knowledge of trends in content creation, storytelling, and emerging communication technologies.
  • Understanding of regulatory governance and rights management in the media sector.
  • Adaptable problem-solving skills to manage both long-term projects and unexpected opportunities.
  • Experienced in bipartisan political and diplomatic engagement to advocate effectively within the organization and the transatlantic community.
Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Compensation: Starting salary of $275,000.
