Ophthalmology Laboratory Senior Specialist

The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a Senior Laboratory Specialist to contribute to the field of Ophthalmology within a dynamic research environment.
The Senior Laboratory Specialist will play a crucial role in executing complex laboratory and research tasks essential for the operational success of our research initiatives. This position will involve overseeing laboratory management, including the development of animal welfare protocols, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supervising laboratory personnel in their daily functions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist Principal Investigators in coordinating research projects, conducting experimental procedures, and preparing biological samples for analysis.
- Oversee the management of the animal colony, including breeding, husbandry, genotyping, and ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations.
- Facilitate communication with veterinary staff, researchers, and students to address the needs related to research animals.
- Supervise a small team of support staff responsible for animal care and general laboratory maintenance.
- Manage the daily operations of research projects and maintain accurate records of laboratory equipment and facilities.
- Possibly oversee specialized laboratory operations or fieldwork related to research data analysis.
- Conduct maintenance and minor repairs on laboratory equipment as needed.
- Provide training to users on equipment operation and research methodologies.
- Assist in the recruitment process, including conducting interviews and managing onboarding procedures for new staff.
- Independently collect and analyze research data, collaborating with Principal Investigators on project planning and manuscript preparation.
- May oversee budget management and ensure compliance with financial processes related to laboratory operations.
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify for the Senior level, candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree along with 9 years of relevant laboratory experience. Alternatively, a Master's or Terminal degree with 4 years of experience in a laboratory setting and supervisory experience will be considered. A total of 12 years of lab-related experience may substitute for formal education.
Physical Requirements:
This role requires extended periods of standing and physical activity related to laboratory work and animal care. The position is strictly onsite, and telecommuting is not an option. It also involves fine motor skills for laboratory procedures.
