Position Overview:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Senior Lab Specialist within the Division of Hematology and Oncology. This position is integral to supporting laboratory research focused on molecular genetics, particularly in the areas of DNA repair, DNA recombination, and CRISPR technology.

Key Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will be expected to:
  • Manage an independent research project.
  • Provide assistance in experiments involving cell culture, Western blotting, DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, and CRISPR editing techniques.
  • Train new laboratory personnel in scientific methods and procedures.
  • Collaborate with senior scientists to develop and refine methodologies and protocols for ongoing research initiatives.
  • Support data collection and entry into electronic systems.
  • Procure laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Conduct routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Perform data analysis and laboratory procedures consistently.
  • Oversee laboratory operations, including reagent distribution and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 9 years in a laboratory technician capacity; a Master's or Terminal degree may substitute for 4 years of experience, with supervisory experience preferred. A total of 12 years of lab-related experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • A Master's degree in molecular biology or a closely related scientific discipline is highly desirable.

Essential Skills:
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Capability to analyze and organize work processes; plan and execute experiments; interpret and communicate findings effectively.
  • Ability to conduct laboratory experiments independently.
  • Proficient in data collection and sample handling.
  • Comprehensive understanding of laboratory processes and protocols.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience mentoring junior lab staff.

Physical Requirements:
This role may require extended periods of standing and performing tasks that involve fine motor skills.
