Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Resource Teacher's Assistant to join our team at Norman Public Schools. As a key member of our special education department, you will play a vital role in supporting students with diverse needs and abilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers with instruction and activities for individuals or groups, as assigned.
  • Supervise students in instructional settings, off-campus activities, and during non-instructional activities such as recess, assemblies, emergency drills, and lunch periods.
  • Supervise students in teacher's absence and prepare, create, or adapt instructional materials as directed by the teacher.
  • Prepare bulletin boards and other teaching aids, assist students with assignments, and setup and operate equipment for instructional purposes.
  • Serve as the chief source of information and assistance for substitute teachers.
  • Assist teachers with student behavior management strategies and respond appropriately to out-of-control students when necessary.
  • Alert teachers to special needs of students and may be required to assist students with external feedings or personal care.
  • Assist students with boarding and exiting transportation or supervision prior to or after exiting transportation while on school grounds.
  • Perform housekeeping duties to ensure the classroom is neat and clean, wash dishes, disinfect toys and tables, defrost the freezer, and prepare snacks for students.
  • May ride the afternoon bus route supervising student behavior on the bus.
  • Operate photocopiers, laminators, and duplicators, and may operate computers.
  • Assist teachers with compiling student work to send home weekly and send letters home to parents as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Meets Tier 1 Paraprofessional Requirements, which include completing two years of study at an institution of higher education or obtaining an associate's degree or higher.
  • Holds an Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Certificate or is willing to complete the Tier 2 (Special Education) Paraprofessional Requirements and obtain the certificate in a timely manner.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED, with college hours helpful in meeting Tier 1 Paraprofessional Requirements.
  • Previous work or volunteer experience with children, teenagers, and/or clerical experience is preferred.
