Job Title: Elementary Support Specialist

Credentials: None required for this position.

Education: High School Diploma or GED; Some college hours preferred. All newly hired teacher assistants working in a Title-funded site must hold an associate degree or have 2 years of post-secondary education, or be a high school graduate and pass a PARAPRO or OGET test.

Required Experience: Previous work or volunteer experience with children, teenagers, and/or clerical experience preferred.

Reports to: Building Principal

Contract: 175 days

Salary Schedule: Teacher's Assistant

FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support instructional activities for individuals or groups as directed by the teacher. Supervise students in various settings, including instructional and non-instructional activities.
  • Prepare and adapt educational materials as instructed by the teacher. Create bulletin boards and other teaching aids. Assist students with their assignments and manage classroom equipment.
  • Act as a primary resource for substitute teachers.
  • Assist the teacher in managing student behavior. Respond appropriately to behavioral issues and inform the teacher of students' special needs.
  • Grade assignments, maintain attendance records, and complete necessary documentation for students.
  • May assist students with personal care needs and provide minor first aid.
  • Maintain a clean and organized classroom environment. Assist students with boarding and disembarking from the bus.
  • Operate office equipment such as photocopiers and laminators. Help teachers gather supplies for activities and compile student work for distribution.
  • Ensure confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Successful execution of this role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to resolve issues while providing information and support. Compliance with safety protocols is essential to minimize risks to staff and students. Adherence to professional dress standards and attendance policies is expected. Creativity, initiative, and effective problem-solving skills are vital for success in this position. The role may involve frequent physical activity, including bending, lifting, and operating various educational tools and equipment. The incumbent must effectively supervise students and communicate with them and their parents, ensuring a supportive educational environment.
