Position Overview

Marlborough School is in search of a skilled and proactive Senior Accountant to support the institution's comprehensive accounting operations. This role is pivotal in managing the reconciliation and completion of general ledger accounts while also assisting in the administration of various financial audits and tax documentation. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for preparing financial statements and operational reports, alongside handling more intricate accounting matters.

This full-time exempt position is integral to a collaborative team of accounting professionals and reports directly to the Controller & Business Manager. The ideal candidate will possess a robust accounting background and prior supervisory experience, with preference given to those holding a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.

Key ResponsibilitiesEssential Functions
  • Oversee general ledger maintenance and management.
  • Review and authorize all journal entries submitted by Staff Accountants.
  • Handle monthly recurring journal entries for complex accounting areas, including fixed assets and deferred revenue.
  • Collaborate with Staff Accountants, providing assistance and guidance as necessary.
  • Manage accounting processes and procedures with a focus on efficiency and accuracy.
Financial Reporting
  • Assist the Controller & Business Manager in the preparation of financial statements and tax reports, coordinating with independent auditors.
  • Support the preparation of operating statements and annual budgets.
  • Monitor departmental budgets, identifying discrepancies and overruns.
  • Generate statistical reports and necessary information.
Reconciliations
  • Reconcile investment accounts and prepare monthly journal activity.
  • Conduct quarterly reconciliations of Temporarily Restricted and Permanently Restricted Assets.
  • Review and approve reconciliations prepared by Staff Accountants.
  • Prepare year-end reconciliations as required.
Additional Projects
  • Provide support to senior administrators as needed.
  • Engage in other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting is required.
  • CPA license is strongly preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), particularly in non-profit accounting.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in accounting, ideally within the independent school or non-profit sector.
  • Familiarity with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT and Tuition Management is advantageous.
  • Proficient in G-Suite applications and Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.
  • Ability to prioritize and achieve goals effectively.
  • Highly organized, demonstrating success both independently and in team settings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on customer service and problem-solving.
  • Professional demeanor is essential due to regular interactions with various stakeholders.
