Overview:

In the role of Corporate Venture Capital Associate focused on the Energy and Climate sector, you will collaborate with investors, entrepreneurs, and the broader innovation community to identify exceptional and valuable emerging technologies and business ventures for investment, mergers and acquisitions, and direct collaboration. Your time will be divided, with approximately 70% dedicated to sourcing, proposing, and leading strategic investment initiatives alongside the Corporate Venturing team, while the remaining 30% will focus on expanding your network and sourcing deals within the designated region.

We encourage candidates with experience in corporate strategic investments and mergers and acquisitions related to startup opportunities, particularly those with a strong grasp of various technology sectors for initial due diligence assessments, to consider this opportunity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize your extensive background in investment, venture capital, startups, and engineering technology to explore the startup innovation landscape, identifying opportunities for investment and collaboration. Key focus areas include Automotive, Transportation, Mobility (including Aerospace), and initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
  • Identify investment opportunities that involve transformative technologies aligned with our business objectives and product offerings.
  • Leverage your personal network of venture capital firms, corporate venture capital entities, and startups to ensure a high-quality deal flow.
  • Enhance and expand your professional network, engaging with venture capital firms, corporate venture capital firms, startups, and related organizations.
  • Conduct initial due diligence, assessing market potential, technical capabilities, financial stability, and team composition by gathering insights from target companies, industry experts, and other relevant sources.
  • Prepare and present investment proposals to the ventures team on a weekly basis.
  • Lead the internal investment process for selected opportunities.
  • Act as the primary liaison and support for portfolio companies.
  • Facilitate internal collaborations with startups as needed.
  • Proactively seek out investment, merger, and collaboration opportunities involving emerging and transformative technologies pertinent to our current and future business strategies.
  • Develop investment theses across various technology domains.
  • Serve as a key resource within a larger team, focusing on 2-3 technology verticals of interest.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2-5+ years of experience in a corporate venture capital or venture capital environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise as part of a corporate venture capital or venture capital team.
  • A unique combination of experience in investment, venture capital, startups, and engineering technology.
  • A proven track record in sourcing, proposing, and finalizing early-stage investments and deals.
  • In-depth industry knowledge in one or more of the following areas: CASE (Connected, Automated, Shared, and Electrified) Mobility, Smart City, Energy/Climate Technology, with the ability to conduct initial due diligence in these fields.
  • A robust network in the Bay Area for sourcing high-quality deals.
  • Strong understanding of various technology sectors for initial due diligence assessments.
  • Experience and knowledge in automotive, transportation, mobility (including aerospace), and initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
  • Strategic investment and M&A experience with startups, along with a solid understanding of various technology sectors for initial due diligence assessments.
  • Familiarity with the startup ecosystem and the venture capital or corporate venture capital processes.
  • Proven ability to discover a high volume of unique and investable deal flow opportunities.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • A passion for leveraging new technologies to enhance experiences and improve human mobility.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret data and communicate relevant conclusions effectively.
  • A proactive and driven mindset, capable of adapting to dynamic environments and thriving amidst ambiguity.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to quickly acquire technical knowledge in new areas.
  • A strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build relationships within the industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Japanese business culture and practices.
  • A strong network on the East Coast is advantageous.
  • Experience in corporate development.
  • Formal experience in investment due diligence.
  • A Master’s degree in science, engineering, materials, or a related field is highly preferred.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid schedule with onsite work required three days a week.

Travel Requirements: Up to 30% domestic and international travel may be necessary.

Employment Type: Contract to Hire
